Overview

On Monday, the Washington Redskins fired head coach Jay Gruden, making him the first casualty of the 2019 season. It’s a move that was expected after the dreadful 0-5 start, but it’s one that hardly points in a positive direction for this team. The offense is among the worst in the league, currently placing in the bottom five in yards per game and recording the third-worst points per game mark at 14.6. Case Keenum wasn’t getting the job done so they tested out Dwayne Haskins against a weak Giants’ secondary, and he proceeded to throw three interceptions. They went out and got Colt McCoy for last week’s game against New England, and the result was more of the same.

The defense hasn’t been any better, giving up less than 30 points in a game only once all season. They have faced some of the best offenses in the league in the Patriots and Cowboys, but they have also given up points to a struggling Bears’ offense and surrendered 24 points to rookie quarterback Daniel Jones two weeks ago.

While the Redskins are among the worst in the league in every category, the Dolphins are worse nearly across the board. Miami has scored just 26 points through four games for a horrid average of 6.5 points per game. They have dismantled their locker room, sending away key players such as Laremy Tunsil, Kenny Stills, and Minkah Fitzpatrick for a slew of draft picks, including many first-rounders.

There are many who believe the Dolphins are tanking for the draft, but despite the scores of their games, they have actually looked better in recent weeks. They trailed just 10-6 to the Cowboys three weeks ago heading into the half, and two weeks ago took their first lead of the season over the Chargers. Their schedule would be a hard one to navigate for any team, facing four playoff teams from a year ago in their first four games, and this week we will see what the Dolphins are really made of when they face a team that is much more their equal.

Trends

  • The Dolphins are 0-4 ATS this season, an 0-7 ATS in their last seven games.
  • The Redskins are 1-4 ATS this season.
  • The total has gone under in eight of Miami’s last 12 games.
  • The Redskins are 0-5 SU in their last five games in Miami.
  • The Dolphins are 5-1 SU in their last six games played in Week 6.
  • The Redskins are 1-5 SU in their last six road games.

Prop Bet

First Half Spread Dolphins +1.5 (+110)
The Dolphins may be tanking for Tua, but they have looked solid in the first half of their two most recent games. Coming off the bye, I think they come out hot. If the tank is on, they can fall apart in the second half like they have done all season, but they should get some points in the first half. It’s weird to say, but they may be better than the Redskins right now.

Bottom Line

Both of these teams are terrible, and it’s hard to trust either one. My advice would be to stay away from this game because it is so dangerous to put your faith in either quarterback. But if forced to pick, and I can’t believe I’m about to say this, I’m going with the Dolphins. Their schedule has been harder than the Redskins, and they’ve looked better with Josh Rosen under center, while the Redskins have looked terrible on offense recently.

Pick: Dolphins +3.5 (-120)
