Week 9 NFL Power Rankings (2019)

The 49ers made a statement in their victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, letting the NFL know that they are definitely for real. Meanwhile, the Patriots continued with business as usual, taking care of the Browns easily. On the QB front, Drew Brees came back from his injury and didn’t look to have missed a beat, while the Broncos received bad news in the form of a Joe Flacco neck injury that will keep him out for at least this week.

32) Miami Dolphins (Prev: 32)
The Dolphins jumped out to a 14-0 lead against the Steelers but gave up 27 unanswered points to drop to 0-7 on the season. The offense had four turnovers in the loss.

31) Cincinnati Bengals (Prev: 31)
The Bengals are the first team to garner eight losses, giving them the distinction of the first without the ability to finish the season above .500. It’s their worst start since 2008.

30) Washington Redskins (Prev: 30)
Case Keenum was ruled out for the second half with a concussion, which meant Dwayne Haskins saw more action in his rookie season. He only threw the ball five times, despite the Redskins trailing for the entire second half, and was sacked twice. Adrian Peterson had 76 yards rushing and moved into 6th place all-time on the NFL rushing list.

29) Atlanta Falcons (Prev: 29)
Matt Schaub threw for 460 yards filling in for the injured Matt Ryan, as the Falcons’ offense outgained the Seahawks 512-322. The problem: The Falcons trailed 24-0 at halftime, so all the yardage and scoring came when the game was already out of reach.

28) New York Jets (Prev: 25)
Sam Darnold threw three interceptions for the second straight week, and the excitement after upsetting the Cowboys two weeks ago has proven to be short-lived. Le’Veon Bell had just 23 yards rushing, half of the Jets’ total 46 on the day.

27) New York Giants (Prev: 28)
Daniel Jones had the best game of his professional career on Sunday, going 28-41 for 322 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He did have a costly fumble on a backward pass in the first quarter that resulted in a Lions scoop and score. The Lions didn’t relinquish the lead after that.

26) Arizona Cardinals (Prev: 26)
The Cardinals played a solid half of football against the Saints, who regained Drew Brees after his five-game stint on the injury report. It was 10-6 at the half, but the wheels fell off in the second where they were outscored 21-3. Despite the offense failing to score much, they did finish the game with zero turnovers.

25) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Prev: 23)
Jameis Winston continues to be a problem for Tampa Bay. He turned the ball over four times in Sunday’s loss at Tennessee. In a one-score game every turnover matters, especially ones that set up one-play 10-yard touchdown drives.

24) Denver Broncos (Prev: 21)
It was another heartbreak for a team whose season has been defined by such losses. Adam Vinatieri made a 51-yard field goal with just 22 seconds left and Denver fell to 2-6 on the season. Joe Flacco suffered a neck injury that will keep him out this week against Cleveland.

23) Los Angeles Chargers (Prev: 27)
The Chargers managed to finish out a game, and for the moment, have saved their season from the brink of disaster. Offensively, they gained just 231 yards, but the defense was able to force two turnovers and keep Eddy Pineiro just far enough away to miss the game-winning field goal as time expired.

22) Cleveland Browns (Prev: 22)
The Browns never had a chance against the Patriots, falling behind 17-0 and never making the game competitive the rest of the way. Turnovers continued to be a problem for the offense. They had three on Sunday, dropping their season ratio to -9.

21) Tennessee Titans (Prev: 24)
Ryan Tannehill looks like exactly what the Titans’ offense needed. Tennessee has won both of his starts this season, and he has thrown for five touchdowns and just one interception. They have scored over 20 points in both victories, something they had only done twice all season previously.

20) Oakland Raiders (Prev: 20)
The Raiders didn’t trail until 6:26 remaining in the game. Derek Carr had one of his best games of the season going 18-30 for 285 yards and three touchdowns. The offense didn’t turn the ball over once, but the defense didn’t cause any either, and the Raiders dropped to 3-4.

19) Carolina Panthers (Prev: 13)
Kyle Allen had his worst start as a Panther and Carolina got embarrassed by San Francisco 51-13. The offense had just 230 yards in the loss, 155 of which were due to Christian McCaffrey.

18) Chicago Bears (Prev: 14)
Eddy Pineiro missed a 41-yard field goal as time expired and the Bears dropped to 3-4 on the season and 1-3 at home. The offense outgained the Chargers 388-231 and ended with 15 more first downs than LA, yet managed only 16 points. Chicago has three key matchups against Philadelphia, Detroit, and the Rams which will either make or break their playoff hopes.

17) Pittsburgh Steelers (Prev: 17)
It wasn’t pretty, but the Steelers avoided disaster and came back from a 14-point deficit to take care of the winless Dolphins. Mason Rudolph had a terrible start to the game, throwing an interception on the first drive, but he rebounded to throw for 251 yards and two touchdowns.

16) Jacksonville Jaguars (Prev: 19)
After two lackluster performances, Gardner Minshew II had a great game going 22-34 for 279 yards and three touchdowns. The defense intercepted Sam Darnold three times. Jacksonville is now 4-4, and they travel to London this week for a huge divisional matchup with the Texans.

15) Philadelphia Eagles (Prev: 18)
The Eagles got the win they so desperately needed and looked great in the process, beating the Bills 31-13 in Buffalo. Despite heavy winds, Carson Wentz went 17-24 for 172 yards and a touchdown in the victory. Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard combined for 170 yards on the ground.

14) Detroit Lions (Prev: 16)
The Lions ended their three-game skid with their victory over the Giants on Sunday. Matthew Stafford was 25-32 for 342 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in the victory. The upcoming schedule is favorable for the Lions, with four of their next five against teams currently below .500.

13) Buffalo Bills (Prev: 8)
The Bills fell back to earth on Sunday against a desperate Eagles team that found numerous ways to score. Josh Allen was sacked four times and completed only 47.1 percent of his passes. The running backs had a rough game, as Frank Gore and Devin Singletary combined for just 53 rushing yards.

12) Los Angeles Rams (Prev: 15)
Cooper Kupp recorded 220 receiving yards, as the Rams took it to the Bengals from the start in their 24-10 victory. LA is on a two-game winning streak after their three-game skid. The Rams need to continue beating the teams they’re supposed to, as they still sit in third place in the NFC West despite their 5-3 record.

11) Houston Texans (Prev: 12)
The Texans trailed all game, but Deshaun Watson led a go-ahead touchdown drive with 6:26 remaining, and the defense held up to escape with a victory. This week’s game against Jacksonville will be huge in determining who will be competing with the Colts for the AFC South title.

10) Seattle Seahawks (Prev: 11)
The Seahawks jumped out to a 24-0 first-half lead then took their foot off the gas in their 27-20 victory. Russell Wilson hooked up with rookie DK Metcalf for two touchdowns, while the defense forced three Atlanta turnovers.

9) Dallas Cowboys (Prev: 10)
The Cowboys travel to New York to take on the Giants on Monday Night Football, and with a win would move to 4-0 in the NFC East.

8) Baltimore Ravens (Prev: 9)
The Ravens enjoyed their bye week as they watched the Browns fall yet again. After eight weeks, the Ravens have a two-game or more lead on every team in the division, and the team nearest them is starting an unproven quarterback. Things are looking good for Baltimore.

7) Kansas City Chiefs (Prev: 6)
In their first game without Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs showed resiliency after falling behind 14-0, as they took a 17-14 lead into the half. Matt Moore was solid throwing for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Things don’t get easier for Kansas City as they take on the red-hot Vikings this week.

6) Indianapolis Colts (Prev: 7)
Adam Vinatieri missed an extra point and a field goal, but he redeemed himself by drilling a 51-yard field goal with 22 seconds left to push the Colts to 5-2. Marlon Mack continued to be the workhorse on the offensive end, rushing 19 times for 76 yards and a touchdown.

5) Minnesota Vikings (Prev: 5)
The score from Thursday night’s game against the Redskins doesn’t express how dominant the Vikings were in their victory. They possessed the ball for 36:36, and the defense gave up just 216 yards all game. Dalvin Cook continued his incredible season, hauling in five balls for 73 yards to go along with 98 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

4) Green Bay Packers (Prev: 3)
Aaron Rodgers connected with Aaron Jones seven times for 159 yards and two touchdowns, including what proved to be the game-winner midway through the fourth quarter. In his last two games, Rodgers has thrown for eight touchdowns and zero interceptions.

3) San Francisco 49ers (Prev: 4)
Tevin Coleman and the San Francisco 49ers absolutely decimated the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, putting up 51 points in the victory. The defense intercepted Kyle Allen three times, and the 49ers are now 7-0 with a matchup in Arizona looming on Thursday Night Football.

2) New Orleans Saints (Prev: 2)
In his first game since his Week 2 thumb injury, Drew Brees threw for 373 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception as the Saints routed the Cardinals 31-9. Alvin Kamara again missed the game, but Latavius Murray had a great game replacing him, with 102 yards and a touchdown on the ground to go along with nine catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.

1) New England Patriots (Prev: 1)
The Patriots’ defense has scored as many touchdowns this season as it has allowed: Four. That’s an incredible number through eight weeks of a season, especially in today’s NFL. There is no denying that the Patriots are the best team in football at the moment.
