Wells Fargo Championship PGA Betting Guide (2021)

Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, hosts this week’s Wells Fargo Championship. A strong field is in attendance, as we’re just two weeks away from the PGA Championship. Many of the world’s top golfers are making their final preparations for the year’s second major.

Max Homa returns to Quail Hollow as the defending champion after the 2020 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s in excellent form off of a T6 finish at last week’s Valspar Championship (won by Sam Burns). He’ll need to defend his title against two-time Wells Fargo champ Rory McIlroy and six of the top-9 golfers in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Course Preview (Quail Hollow Club)

Quail Hollow is revered as one of the toughest annual stops on the PGA Tour schedule. It measures 7,521 yards and plays to a par of 71. It features large, Bermudagrass greens and water is in play on five holes, including four of the final five. The closing three-hole stretch, known as “The Green Mile,” consists of the three most difficult holes on the course. Length is the greatest test, with three of four par 3s topping 200 yards and all but two par 4s being at least 449 yards.

In addition to hosting a tournament annually since 2003, Quail Hollow played host to the 2017 PGA Championship (won by Justin Thomas) and will host the 2022 Presidents Cup.

Outright Betting Picks

Bryson DeChambeau (+1500 on FanDuel Sportsbook)

DeChambeau leads all qualified golfers with 1.21 SG: Off-the-Tee and 2.25 SG: Tee-to-Green per round through 30 measured rounds this season, according to Data Golf. He finished fourth in this event in his last appearance in 2018 and won’t need to rely nearly as heavily on his putter with his added distance. His occasional inaccuracy off the tee won’t be punished nearly as much as it was in a disappointing T46 finish at the Masters. He’s a strong bet for his third win of the 2020-21 season with the third-best odds to win this week.

Corey Conners (+3300 on DraftKings Sportsbook)

The Canadian tied for 42nd when he last played the Wells Fargo Championship in 2018. He’s coming off a T21 finish at the Valspar after racking up four top-10 placings in his previous six events. His iron play has been excellent, and he’s 10th among qualified golfers in SG: Approach. His putting is much improved from 2018, when he lost 0.37 strokes per round on these greens.

Long-shot Betting Picks

Shane Lowry (+6600 on BetMGM Sportsbook)

The long-reigning Champion Golfer of the Year as the winner of the 148th Open Championship is still looking for his first win since. He has two top-10 finishes, and just one missed cut in seven North American events this year, including a T9 finish at the RBC Heritage. He’s struggling with the flat stick, but his irons and short game have been sharp. He tied for 48th at the 2017 PGA Championship and 34th at the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship.

Doc Redman (+25000 on FanDuel Sportsbook)

Redman’s worth a shot for a 250-1 payout after showing some signs of old form with a T39 finish last week, where he averaged 0.79 SG: Off-the-Tee per round. He tied for 18th in this event in 2019 with 1.20 SG: Off-the-Tee and 1.55 SG: Tee-to-Green per round. Redman’s still searching for his first professional win and has dropped to No. 162 in the OWGR, but Homa was without a win and outside of the top 400 when he won in 2019.
