Before it was known as ‘tennis,’ it was called ‘lawn tennis.’ The first Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Tournament was held in 1877, making it the oldest of the four tennis Grand Slams.
When it comes to playing style, grass courts are the slickest court surface. This makes them the fastest. Balls often skid, take unpredictable bounces and rarely ever bounce up above a player’s knee. Players must be able to reach the ball quicker when playing on grass as opposed to other surfaces. Because of the quick pace, rallies are often shorter. When it comes to skillsets, speed, power, and an effective serve tend to be rewarded on grass courts.

While laying 25 cents on a pre-tournament futures wager isn’t exactly the most lucrative betting venture, it’s impossible not to include Novak Djokovic in this article. After all, he is the two-time reigning Wimbledon champion and is showing no signs of slowing down. Djoker has three tournament titles on the season, including both the Australian Open and the French Open. His 2021 record to date is 27-3. Djokovic is the top-ranked player in the world and has his name etched in at the top of the gentlemen’s bracket as the one-seed. While the other three players who comprised the ‘Big 4’ in men’s tennis for the better part of the century have fallen off a bit, Djokovic is showing no signs of slowing down. He has a great shot at winning Wimbledon for the sixth time and bringing his career Grand Slam championship total to 20.
Stefanos Tsitsipas (+800 at BetMGM)
Talk about a player who is oh so close to breaking through. Stefanos Tsitsipas squandered a two-set lead in the French Open final against Novak Djokovic. After coming just short of capturing his first Grand Slam championship, the 22-year-old will give it another go at Wimbledon. Tsitsipas continues to show glimpses of his all-around skill set. He has advanced to the semifinals at each of the first two Grand Slams this year and has shown sound ability on each surface. His best prior showing at Wimbledon was a trip to the Third Round back in 2018. That said, Tsitsipas is a far better player now than he was three years ago. He enters Wimbledon ranked fourth in the world and is seeded third in the draw. Tsitsipas should face little resistance between his first match and the quarterfinals. From there, it simply becomes a matter of closing the deal.
Longshot Betting Pick
Gael Monfils (+80000 at DraftKings Sportsbook)
Inconsistency has plagued Gael Monfils over the years, and 2021 has been no different. He has only won two out of nine matches this calendar year coming into Wimbledon. Yet, he is still holding onto the No. 16 ranking and is seeded 13th in this year’s draw. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam in which Monfils has not advanced past the Fourth Round, which he reached in 2018. At 34 years of age, one could certainly argue that Monfils’ best tennis is behind him. That said, for those looking for a longshot Wimbledon hopeful, it doesn’t get any better than this.
DraftKings has Monfils priced at a ridiculous 800-1 to win the tournament outright. When compared to FanDuel’s 120-1 and BetMGM’s 150-1 odds, that is an insane discrepancy. Monfils should be able to clear his first three hurdles in the draw. That would likely result in a matchup with Novak Djokovic in the Round of 16. For bettors, this could play out as the perfect hedge opportunity.
