The first women’s tournament was held shortly after in 1884.
When it comes to playing style, grass courts are the slickest court surface. This makes them the fastest. Balls often skid, take unpredictable bounces and rarely ever bounce up above a player’s knee. Players must be able to reach the ball quicker when playing on grass as opposed to other surfaces. Because of the quick pace, rallies are often shorter. When it comes to skillsets, speed, power, and an effective serve tend to be rewarded on grass courts.
Wimbledon Women’s Outright Picks

While it’s certainly tempting to make Serena Williams the short-odds pick to win her eighth Wimbledon championship, things aren’t the same for her this season. At age 31, Petra Kvitova is eight years younger and has plenty of Wimbledon success in her own right. A two-time champion (2011, 2014), Kvitova fell in the Round of 16 the last time Wimbledon was played back in 2019. However, she does have one singles title in her pocket already this season. After a quick exit from the French Open last month, Kvitova figures to come into the season’s third Grand Slam hungry. Among the tournament betting favorites, 12-1 odds offer a healthy payout on a lady who has a real shot at nabbing her third Venus Rosewater Dish.
Elena Rybakina (+2400 at DraftKings Sportsbook)
We go from a seasoned WTA veteran in Kvitova to an upstart 22-year-old. Elena Rybakina turned some heads at Rolan Garros by advancing all the way to the tournament quarterfinals. That run helped propel her to the No. 21 overall ranking in the world coming into the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Rybakina has two singles titles in her professional career, with one on a hard court surface and the other on clay. She has also finished runner-up in five additional tournaments. The Kazakh player comes into Wimbledon with momentum and is worth a look at 24-1 betting odds.
Longshot Betting Pick
Maria Sakkari (+3800 at FanDuel Sportsbook)
Given the unpredictable nature and level playing field of women’s tennis this season, it’s hard to really find a massive longshot pick to win Wimbledon in the pre-tournament futures. Nonetheless, 38-1 odds on Greece’s Maria Sakkari aren’t too shabby in the least. The 25-year-old is yet to win a tournament this season, but the improvements in her game are undeniable. She is coming off of a semifinal run in the French Open, her best-ever showing in a Grand Slam. Sakkari has had marginal success in her prior appearances at Wimbledon, advancing to the Third Round in 2017 and the most recent edition in 2019. She has a hard-hitting and quick playing style, one that could very well allow her to make a name for herself on the grass courts of Wimbledon.
