Connecticut Sun vs. Washington Mystics WNBA First Basket Scorers
When these two met earlier this season, both teams had a shot at making the first basket before Jacy Sheldon finally hit a 16-foot pull-up 55 seconds in. That was the first of only two games in which the Sun hit the first shot (Olivia Nelson-Ododa vs. Minnesota). In the six games where they did not, Tina Charles made the team's first basket in three games, Bria Hartley did so twice and Marina Mabrey once.
Washington has had a similar season regarding first baskets. They've hit the first basket in a game just twice, both on the road (Sonia Citron and Jade Melbourne. Of their other seven games, Kiki Iriafen scored the team's first basket four times, Brittney Sykes twice and Sug Sutton once.
Both teams are playing offense and defense at a similar level right now, which makes it hard to pick a team. However, if you prefer Washington, Iriafin is the best choice. Sykes takes more shots than her, but Iriafin has a better shooting percentage. As for Connecticut, Charles and Mabrey have taken the same number of shots the last few nights and made the same number.
But I'm going with Charles since she has made the team's first basket a few times.
Picks: Kiki Iriafen (+550)/Tina Charles (+380)
Minnesota Lynx vs. Dallas Wings WNBA First Basket Scorers
Minnesota is undefeated and has one of the best offenses in the league. Surely a player from the Lynx will make the first basket, right? Not necessarily. The Lynx have made the first basket just twice this season, both times at home (vs. Phoenix and Golden State). Dallas has done so six times, including both games against Minnesota (Paige Bueckers and Nalyssa Smith).
Of those six, DiJonai Carrington can claim two, Myisha Hines-Allen two and Smith and Bueckers one each.
There is one pretty telling stat between these two teams - the pace of play. Dallas has one of the fastest and has made the first basket in six games. Minnesota is one of the slowest and has done so twice. That means betting on someone from the Dallas roster. But who? I settled on Carrington over Hines-Allen because she takes almost twice as many shots as Hines-Allen does.
That tells me it is more likely that Carrington will have the first opportunity to score and will take the shot.
Our Pick: DiJonai Carrington (+900)
