Tuesday’s Best WNBA Picks

Las Vegas Aces at Connecticut Sun

The Aces started the season on Saturday with a 92-78 loss to the New York Liberty in a semi-final rematch from last year’s playoffs. The Aces no longer have the services of Kelsey Plum, who made her way to the Sparks in the offseason, and Las Vegas seemed to miss her scoring. The Aces shot only 34.1% from the floor, including only 34% from inside the arc.

I expect Las Vegas to improve in this matchup with the Sun. Last year, the Aces finished second in the league in offensive rating while shooting 51.6% from two-point territory. They may still be figuring out how the offense functions without Plum, but it's more likely they ran into a defensive buzzsaw against the Liberty.

The Sun had some massive turnover in the offseason. They lost five of their six top scorers from last season, with just Marina Mabrey returning. Connecticut did add UConn legend Tina Charles, and she showed out with a 23-point and 10-rebound performance on Sunday in a loss to the Mystics. However, Washington has been pushed around on the boards to the tune of a 70-58 disparity in two games.

Connecticut will find life a lot harder this season after a phenomenal 2024 campaign. Meanwhile, the Aces have been one of the best teams in the league the last few years, and I expect them to bounce back after a tough loss to a very strong Liberty team.

Pick: Aces -13 (-108)

Atlanta Dream at Indiana Fever

Caitlin Clark started the follow-up to her electric rookie campaign with a triple-double in the Fever's opening day 93-58 win over the Chicago Sky. Three other Fever players added double-digit point performances, with Aliyah Boston adding 19 points and 13 rebounds on her own.

Atlanta kicked off their season against the Mystics on Friday night. It was a back-and-forth battle that ended with a 94-90 Mystics win. Despite the loss, Atlanta had huge performances from Brionna Jones and Brittney Griner, who were major additions to this team. They combined for 34 points and 18 rebounds. The Dream out-rebounded their opponent and recorded six more assists.

What hurt the Dream was 16 turnovers that resulted in 20 points for the Mystics. They were a top-four team last year in turnovers, so this spike is a concern. Additionally, this is a concern against the Fever, who forced 19 turnovers against Chicago.

Last season, the Fever were a fun story to catapult into the playoffs. This year, they have loftier goals in sight. The Dream should be a better team this year as well, but I don't think they can keep up with the Fever.

Pick: Fever -7.5 (-110)
