Friday’s Best WNBA Picks & Predictions
(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)
Connecticut Sun at Indiana Fever
Despite a very successful second half of the season, the Fever continue to fail to cover. Indiana is only 3-7 against the spread (ATS) in their last 10 games. This is despite being 6-4 straight up (SU) over the same period, dating back to the beginning of the month.
Connecticut is more than capable of turning the Fever’s fortunes around. The Sun have been just as putrid ATS as the Fever in recent weeks. They're just 4-6 ATS in their last 10, and for the season on the road they're only 6-12.
The Sun’s offense is truly the worst in the league. They are dead last in offensive rating and effective field-goal rate (eFG%), and they'll have a really tough time taking advantage of Indiana’s defensive weaknesses.
I fully expect the Fever’s offense, which has been steamrolling overmatched opponents like Connecticut, to continue their offensive output. Indiana has averaged 97.4 points per game (PPG) in August. If they can match that, the Sun will have no chance but to keep pace.
This is one of the largest spreads in the WNBA this season and for good reason. I'll back a Fever team that has struggled against the spread recently, despite some elite offensive output.
Pick: Fever -17.5 (-104)
Washington Mystics at Los Angeles Sparks
The Mystics are in the middle of a West Coast road trip as they make their way to Los Angeles on Friday. This will be the second game of a back-to-back for a Washington team coming into the game red hot. Washington has an 8-3 SU record in August. Can they remain hot against a reeling Sparks team?
This is Washington's first back-to-back of the season, so there isn't any real trend data to indicate how this game might go. However, they've played 22 games this season on only one day of rest. They've managed a record of only 12-10 in those games, going 12-5 in all others. It's no surprise, but they tend to play better with more rest.
The Sparks have struggled this season behind a non-existent defense. They're below .500 ATS overall and at home. The only trend in their favor is that they have a winning ATS record as an underdog.
For all of Washington’s success this season, they've still struggled on the offensive end. One area where they don't play well is ball control. The Mystics have one of the highest turnover rates in the league. Despite all of Los Angeles' flaws, they've still struggled to turn their opponents over.
The Mystics’ legs are tired on this road trip, and in a second game in two days, they may struggle to put away even this reeling Sparks team. I'll take the underdog to keep this one surprisingly close and even threaten for a win.
Pick: Sparks +4.5 (-108)
