Overview
The Pac-12 may be no more, but that doesn't mean former rivals can't still play. Although, considering Washington State’s history with Stanford, the Cougars might have been okay with not seeing the Cardinal for a while. Why?
Because the Washington State women's basketball team has never defeated Stanford, yes, that's right-never.
The final game between these two last season was in Pullman, where a very good Stanford team dominated the Cougars on the way to a 73-58 victory (Feb. 22, 2024). However, the last time Washington State played the Cardinal in Stanford, the Cougars gave them a decent fight, only to lose 74-65 (Jan. 5, 2024).
Stanford was an excellent home team last year, going 17-2. Washington State was not a great road team, nor a bad one, finishing the year with a winning road record of 7-6.
Washington State has a good mix of returning talent and new, with three starters from last year's squad back and six newcomers, including five incoming freshmen. They opened the season Monday with an overtime win over Eastern Washington, 83-82.
Stanford lost its top three scoring threats from last year's 30-6 squad but did have several players from last season's team back. They got some help via the transfer portal in junior guard Tess Heal (Santa Clara) and sophomore forward Mary Ashley Stephenson (Purdue).
They won their season opener by crushing Le Moyne 107-43. Junior guard Jzaniya Harriel led the way with 24 points; she averaged just 3.7 ppg last season.
Trends
- With a record of 21-15 last season, Washington State had back-to-back 20+ win seasons for the first time in program history.
- Stanford's last November loss came in the 2022-23 season, a 76-71 OT loss to then-No. 1 South Carolina.
- Washington State has been picked to finish second in the WCC this season.
- Stanford is projected to finish seventh in the ACC.
Bottom Line
It is hard to go against history here. While it is tempting to take Washington State and the points since they lost by less than that on their last two trips to Stanford. But there is no reason at this point in the season to think Washington State can compete with Stanford. They never have; that doesn't mean they may not someday.
But don't count on that day being today.
Our Pick: Stanford (-11.5)
