Wright State Raiders Preview

As arguably the most talented team in the Horizon League, it was no surprise to see Wright State earn the auto-bid out of that conference. Tanner Holden and Grant Basile are two of the most talented players in the conference. After beginning the season 2-7, Wright State really turned it around, finishing 19-6.

This top-150 offense does a lot of scoring inside the arc, with a high percentage of their shots coming from midrange. Wright State is playing its best basketball right now, ranking 35th in the momentum matric. This is one of the most shallow teams in all the land, however, depending on bench minutes the least out of any tournament team.

I tend not to trust any team that leans more on offense than defense. Wright State ranks 262nd in defense this season and allows anything opponents want inside. Facing a fast-paced team that scores well inside would be a worst-case scenario for Wright State.

Bryant Bulldogs Preview

Any team summary of Bryant has to begin with Peter Kiss. The nation’s leading scorer could get Grayson Allen-level hatred from opposing teams and fan bases based on how much air time he gets this tournament. While he is a showboat, he is a talented player who can score from anywhere inside the arc.

The Northeast’s representative finished the year strong, winning 16 of their final 17 games, capping their season with an absolute blowout of Wagner. Their defense forces opponents to beat them inside. This squad stays out of foul trouble and pushes the pace, running some teams out of the gym.

Bryant has received some national recognition to give them some excitement entering the tournament, but don’t pick this squad to upset anyone. Their 219th adjusted defensive ranking suggests that a competent opponent can do what they want on the offensive side of the ball against them. I simply don’t see them being good enough to keep up with whomever they go up against.

Rapid Prediction for Wright State Raiders vs. Bryant Bulldogs

Will the magnitude of Bryant’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance be too much to handle? This game has the potential to feel like a true road game for the Bulldogs, as Wright State’s campus is a short 15-minute drive from University of Dayton Arena. Bryant uses a morphing 2-3 and 1-3-1 zone defense at a top-ten rate nationally. However, the Raiders are accustomed to facing zones, as only Wake Forest saw a higher percentage of zone defenses this season. Wright State was not the most efficient zone offense this year, but its offense as a whole still ranks in the top third nationally in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency metric. Thus, we lean to the Raiders as slight favorites in what should feel like a home environment, and because they are prepared for this matchup based on the style of play of several teams in their league.
