Wyndham Championship Betting Guide (PGA)

In just his second career Major tournament, Collin Morikawa stole the show at the PGA Championship. The young star shot rounds of 69-69-65-64 to finish at 13-under par and win his first-ever illustrious PGA Major title at TPC Harding Park. His combined score of 129 on the weekend marked the lowest weekend score by a major winner ever. The 23-year-old will be a name to watch for a very long time and this could be the beginning of a very special career.

The PGA Tour will now head to Greensboro, North Carolina, for the annual Wyndham Championship. Played at Sedgefield Country Club, this Donald Ross design is a very gettable course and we can expect plenty of low scores this week. Unfortunately, the field won’t be one of the strongest of the year, but there is still some high-level talent in the mix.

Here are the past five winners of the Wyndham Championship:

  • 2019 J.T. Poston (-21)
  • 2018 Brandt Snedeker (-21)
  • 2017 Henrik Stenson (-22)
  • 2016 Si-Woo Kim (-21)
  • 2015 Davis Love III  (-17)

Course Preview

Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross design that will play as one of the shortest Par 70s on the PGA Tour circuit this season. While golfers of all types of skill sets have had good success here, players with above-average driving accuracy tend to do very well. Fairways are tighter than average and are tree-lined. Hitting fairways will allow for much easier access to the pins and tons of birdie opportunities.

This week, golfers will be making the switch to Bermuda greens. The greens at Sedgefield tend to roll faster than normal, depending on weather conditions. Green sizes will be larger than the Tour average, and golfers will see a fair amount of undulation and run-off areas. A strong approach and proximity numbers will be key this week to success. It should really be a fun tournament after a week of tough scoring at TPC Harding Park.

Best Bets to Win (Odds courtesy of BetMGM)

Webb Simpson (+1100)
It would be criminal to leave Simpson off the betting card anytime he tees it up at Sedgefield. A winner here in 2011, Simpson has continued his exceptional course history with two consecutive runner-up finishes and a third place in 2017. Simpson is first in strokes gained: total, in the last 50 times out on Bermuda. He is an excellent putter on this surface and has sharp approach play to go real low once again. His game is in fine form with a win at the RBC Heritage in June and two top-15s in July.

Justin Rose (+2300)
The former world number one had a difficult July but rebounding last week at the PGA Championship with a T9 finish. He shot three rounds in the 60s at TPC Harding Park in some tough scoring positions. He hasn’t played this tournament since 2009 but finished fifth and just two stories off the lead. What I do like is how well he rates out on Bermuda surfaces where scoring is easy relative to par. In the last 50 rounds under these circumstances, Rose is first in strokes gained: tee-to-green, first in ball-striking, and second in strokes gained: approach.

Best Top-10 Bets

Si Woo Kim (+550)
Kim had his breakout win here in 2016 and followed it up with a fifth-place finish last year. He is also playing some of the best golf his season of late. Last week, Kim cruised to a T13 finish at an extremely stacked PGA Championship field. He is eighth in strokes gained: tee-to-green, and top-20 in approach. Look for Kim to feed off his recent success at a course he has fond memories of.

Charl Schwartzel (+950)
Schwartzel is another nice buy at this number. With a T3 finish a few weeks ago at the 3M Open, and a respectable 58th place at the PGA Championship, he is trending nicely. Schwartzel has a third-place finish the last time he teed it up here in 2015. In the last 50 rounds on Bermuda where scoring is easy relative to par, Schwartzel ranks ninth in the field in strokes gained.
