2020 NFL Draft Prop Bets: Best Bet for First WR Drafted
Free agency is in full swing and by all accounts the 2020 NFL Draft will go ahead on-time, pivoting to a completely digital experience. While not all free agency moves are complete that will be before Joe Burrow is drafted #1 next month, team needs will likely remain the same between now and then.
More so than most years, the wide receiver position is absolutely stacked this year with up to six wide receivers having a realistic chance of going in the first round. Jerry Jeudy (-120)
Playing alongside another first-round prospect in Henry Ruggs III, the 6’1″/293 lbs Jeudy still put up monster numbers in his final two seasons at Alabama. Through his sophomore and junior campaigns, Jeudy averaged 1,239 yards per season while accruing a total of 24 touchdowns.
Probably the most impressive stat-line of his college career, Jeudy averaged 17.25 yards per reception, displaying his breakaway speed that proved lethal when combined with his large frame.
By all accounts, his combine couldn’t have gone much better as his interviews impressed evaluators and his route running process was one of the most defined in the class.
CeeDee Lamb (+120)
Unlike the two Alabama products on this shortlist, Lamb played significant time in all three of his college seasons at Oklahoma, catching darts from three Heisman-caliber quarterbacks. Through his three seasons for the Sooners, Lamb hauled in 3,292 yards and 32 touchdowns.
Like Jeudy, Lamb’s yards after catch numbers are off the charts, averaging 19.02 yards per reception in his three years. Lamb even managed to make his last year his best, despite an offense that focused on a running quarterback in Jalen Hurts and the ground attack.
At 6’2″/198lbs, Lamb is the biggest physical specimens amongst the top three odds on the board. While he’s not the fastest receiver on the board, he more than makes up for it with his size, route-running, and yards after catch ability.
Henry Ruggs III (+600)
Not even the best receiver on his college team, Ruggs III deserves mentioning given he did play beside a freak in Jeudy. Had he played almost anywhere else in the nation, Ruggs III would’ve been a sure-fire WR1 which is why he’s projected to be a future WR1 at the next level.
At 5’11″/188lbs, Ruggs III relies on his speed to stretch defenses which he hardly lacks, turning in a 4.27-40 at the combine. In a sport that values speed, whether it’s in the slot or on special teams, someone will find a spot for Ruggs III in the first round where I fully expect him to go.
Bottom Line?
For my money, it’s hard to pass up on a receiver in Lamb who I see as the best option in this stacked class of receivers. Add in the fact he’s reported to be a great teammate (a rarity at the position +skill level), and Lamb’s talent and numbers make him a great fit for nearly every team in the NFL. At the end of the day, I don’t see a big enough difference to warrant an almost 40 cents price difference.
