One of the many sections of draft props up at FanDuel Sportsbook for the 2020 NFL Draft includes lines on matchups. In this article, we’re going to take a look at quarterbacks Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason and see who is likely to be drafted first.

We know that the first tier of quarterbacks includes Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, and Justin Herbert. Then we’ve got Jordan Love somewhere in the mix and after him, there’s Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason. Both were viewed as sure-fire first-round picks earlier in their careers but after just okay performances in 2019, their grades have dropped. Which of the two will be first to be drafted?

Jake Fromm

Fromm had a relatively decent campaign in 2019 as he completed 60% of his passes, had 2,860 yards, 24 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. The issue is that he struggled in a couple of key games, which was surprising. In the loss to LSU in the SEC Championship, Fromm was just 20-of-42 for 225 yards, one touchdown, and two picks. In the home loss to South Carolina, Fromm had three picks and just one touchdown. Against Auburn, Georgia got the win but he had just 110 yards in the contest.

What was disappointing is that Georgia rolled so many teams throughout the season but Fromm didn’t really post the gaudy numbers. The concern is that while he’s a great leader, a player that coaches love and someone who can make good decisions, he’s not someone that will put a team over the top. He seems to profile more as a backup than a starter.

Jacob Eason

Eason was originally the man for the job at Georgia but he was replaced by Fromm. Eason ended up backing up Fromm for a bit but then transferred to Washington. The thinking was that Eason would propel the Huskies to new heights but he was mostly a pedestrian starter for them. The Huskies actually lost four of their final eight games and Eason was a big reason for it. He had just seven touchdown passes and five interceptions in his final five contests.

Eason has all of the measurables, though. He’s raw and he doesn’t seem to have great intangibles, but when you look at him throw the ball on a practice field, you feel good about him. He can make all of the throws.

Who Goes First?

The conundrum here is, do teams go for Eason, who clearly has more upside, over Fromm, who figures to be an OK starter at best. My guess is that Eason goes higher – even if there’s a lot of hype that lots of coaches like Fromm.

I actually don’t think either of these quarterbacks become quality starters in the NFL, but in the draft, upside will be key here. Teams can find a backup later but Eason at least has the arm to be a possible starter. Coaches will feel like they can mold him. Fromm is what he is, and he can also be an asset to a team, but more likely as just a good backup. Bet on Eason to go first.
