When it comes to cornerbacks in the 2020 NFL Draft, we do know that Ohio State’s Jeffrey Okudah will be first off the board. How things play out after that is a big question mark. The majority of mock drafts tell us that Florida’s C.J. Henderson and LSU’s Kristian Fulton should be second and third, but who goes after that is a big question mark. Guys like Clemson’s A.J. Terrell, Alabama’s Trevon Diggs, and Xavier McKinney are all expected to be in that 25-40 range, which means they could be first- or second-round picks.

Leaving Terrell out of the mix, for now, let’s take a look at who gets drafted first between Diggs and McKinney.

Trevon Diggs

Diggs, who is the younger brother of now Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs, is in the mix to be a late first-round pick. He was a pretty good cover corner last season has good size and instincts and played at Alabama. The Tide defense wasn’t exactly their normal, dominant selves last year as they gashed badly by LSU. That’s probably part of why Diggs is being viewed as a player at the back end of the first round instead of higher. On the year, he finished with three picks and eight passes defended.

The challenge here is that we see some really wild slots for Diggs in terms of the mock drafts. Some have him in the first round while others have him as low as the third round. It’s hard to get a read on what teams really think of this guy.

Xavier McKinney

McKinney was a fellow defensive back of Diggs in the Alabama secondary but he played safety. Many people view him as the top safety in the draft, although grades on him also vary. He’s a really versatile stud who posted 95 tackles last season with three picks, three sacks, five passes defended, and four forced fumbles.

NFL teams really love these types of multi-dimensional safeties who can cover on the back end but also slide up into the box. However, just like Diggs, we see some really different grades on McKinney in terms of mock drafts. Some have him going in the Top 20 while others see him slipping out of the first round. Case and point: CBS Sports had two mock drafts in the last day and in one, McKinney was as high as No. 16 and in the other, he didn’t even make the first round.

Who Goes First?

This is a tricky one here, so I’ll break it down how I see it. -310 is probably too high a price to pay here – especially when I consider that an NFL mock draft aggregator that I use shows McKinney going around No. 31 across all mock drafts (in their calculation) while Diggs is averaging around No. 25. If you think that’s accurate, there’s value with Diggs.

However, while I see some value with Diggs (I think the price is too high on McKinney), logic tells me that McKinney comes off the board first. There are a few corners in that Diggs-realm like maybe A.J. Terrell or Damon Arnette, so teams can wait. I don’t think that Diggs looks like a real shutdown, sure-fire prospect, so there are probably a few guys in his realm.

With McKinney, he’s arguably the top safety on the board and if not, he’s right there with LSU’s Grant Delpit. Someone will value him (and what he offers) sooner than Diggs. That being the case, I think McKinney goes first but I wouldn’t bet it at this price.
