2022 US Open: Simona Halep Betting Odds, Picks & Prediction

Seven women have won the U.S. Open in the last eight years, as only Naomi Osaka has won multiple titles in that span. Thus, the women’s game has significantly evolved and provided much more parity than Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams combining for six U.S. Open titles in seven years from 2008-14.

Speaking of Serena Williams, she is tied for the 13th-best odds to win this year’s title, but the storyline and backdrop for the entire tournament will be that this is her last U.S. Open, as she announced her retirement following the Grand Slam.

This is the first annual BettingPros Guide to the U.S. Open, where we will highlight several of the top contenders from both the Men’s and Women’s Draws.

Will an eighth different woman in nine years add her name to the list of U.S. Open champions? Will Serena Williams write a storybook ending for arguably the best career ever in women’s tennis?

Read on for our thoughts and predictions for Simona Halep at the U.S. Open in 2022.

Simona Halep U.S. Open History

Halep’s 65% winning percentage (20-11 overall record) at the U.S. Open is by far her worst of any of the four Grand Slams. Halep has more first and second-round exits (six) than fourth-round or better results (four) at Flushing Meadows and has made six semifinal appearances or better at the other three Grand Slams since her semifinal appearance here in 2015.

Simona Halep Recent Form

Halep’s victory in Toronto (her first WTA final since Rome in 2020) has to give her confidence heading into the U.S. Open. She dropped just two sets in the six matches and beat two top-11 opponents (Jessica Pegula and Cori Gauff) in the title run. However, success in Canada does not necessarily correlate to success at the U.S. Open, as in the other two years she won titles in Montreal (2016 and 2018), she reached the quarterfinals, and also suffered a first-round exit at the upcoming Grand Slam. Nevertheless, the win vaulted Halep back into the top ten in the rankings, and her 39 victories this year are second only to Iga Swiatek’s 50.
Halep withdrew after her Round of 64 win in Cincinnati with a thigh injury, but it does not appear as anything that will hinder her this week.

Simona Halep U.S. Open Predictions

Halep’s quarter looks the most difficult to predict, as it is the only quarter with three women (Cori Gauff and Caroline Garcia, the others) with +500 odds or shorter to reach the semifinals. Whatever woman makes it out of this quarter will have earned it. And provided they have something left in the tank, they would be highly favored to go on to win the title. Thus, with so many potential landmines before the semifinals, the best way to get onside Halep winning the U.S. Open is to predict that someone from her quarter will go on to victory, which acts as a hedge of sorts.

The Pick: Third Quarter Winner to Win the U.S. Open (+210 on DraftKings)
