2022 Wimbledon: Carlos Alcaraz Garfia Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

Rafael Nadal is halfway to the calendar Grand Slam after winning the first two of the season, the Australian Open and French Open. However, considering just two men have ever won the calendar Grand Slam (Don Budge in 1938 and Rod Laver in 1962 and 1969), the odds are stacked against him, making things feel wide open entering Wimbledon.

Perhaps things are not that wide open, considering Novak Djokovic has won each of the last three Wimbledon titles. Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray have combined to win the previous ten Wimbledon titles. However, Federer will not play the tournament for the first time in more than two decades, and Murray is a shell of himself from the 2013 and 2016 titles now at age 35.

In addition to Federer’s profound absence, Wimbledon will also be played without world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev or Andrey Rublev on the Men’s side, as Wimbledon has banned all players from Russia and Belarus due to the ongoing war in the Ukraine. Lastly, world No. 2 Alexander Zverev’s absence will be felt, as he remains sidelined after undergoing surgery for an ankle injury he suffered at the French Open. As a result, this is the first time since the ATP started ranking players that the top two players would miss Wimbledon.

This is the first annual BettingPros Guide to Wimbledon, where we will highlight several of the top contenders from both the Men’s and Women’s Draws.

Without the world’s top two ranked players, is Djokovic a shoo-in for his fourth consecutive and seventh career Wimbledon title? Will Nadal keep his quest for the calendar Grand Slam alive? What longer shot is best positioned to make a run and claim their first Wimbledon championship?

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia Wimbledon History

Of all the high-seeded players on the Men’s side, Alcaraz has by far the least amount of Wimbledon experience. He has appeared in just one Wimbledon before this year, struggling in a five-set win in his first-round match against Yasutaka Uchiyama before losing to No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets (4-6, 1-6, 2-6).

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia Recent Form

Alcaraz’s quarterfinal exit from the French Open has to be considered somewhat disappointing, considering he was on the opposite side of the draw from Djokovic and Nadal and was one of the top three favorites to win the tournament. However, he was coming off back-to-back wins entering Roland Garros and has a 20-2 record on clay this year.

Alcaraz is now the youngest player in the last 29 years to reach two Grand Slam quarterfinals, as he also made it that far at the US Open. However, he missed last week’s Queen’s Club tune-up event in London last week because of an elbow injury, and we have yet to see him on the court since Roland Garros.

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia Wimbledon Predictions

The Pick: Alcaraz to Win His First Three Matches, Lose to Djokovic in the Quarterfinals

It isn’t easy to gauge Alcaraz’s chances at Wimbledon, considering it is still the only grass tournament he has played to this point in his young career. In addition, Alcaraz was not done any favors with last year’s draw, as there is no telling how many matches he could have won if not running into Medvedev in the second round.

Though Alcaraz has proven he can beat the best in the world with wins over Nadal and Djokovic in consecutive matches in Madrid earlier this year, he was ultimately assigned another tough draw this year with Djokovic as a potential quarterfinal opponent. While we do not expect Alcaraz to beat Djokovic on grass, we would likely back his set spread or game spread in that match, as we would not be confident in Djokovic walking all over him in straight sets.
