2022 Winter Olympics Best Bets: Speed Skating (Short Track Speed Skating Women 1500m)

The Capital Indoor Stadium plays host to the always electric speedskating short track competitions, whose finals are scheduled for this week. On the women’s side, the 1500M short track final will go off early Wednesday morning, and I’ve keyed in on a few different options that I believe still hold some value.

Let’s take a closer look.

Suzanne Schulting [NED]| -200 at DK Sportsbook

At just 24 years of age, Schulting is already one of the most accomplished female speed skaters in the history of the sport. A gold medalist in the 2018 games 1000M event, she already has two in these games in both the 1000M and 3000M relay. In last year’s World Championships, Schulting completed the gold medal sweep, taking home the top medal in the 500M, 1000M, 1500M, 3000M Relay, and Overall.

Her 2021 European Championship appearance looks similar, taking gold in all the aforementioned events in both 2020 AND 2021. The current world record holder in the 1000M, I don’t think the -200 odds are nearly long enough for a skater like Schulting.

Kristen Santos [USA]| +1500 at DK Sportsbook

This is a bit more of a lottery ticket, but I think this American has a real shot at surprising some people in this week’s events. Currently #4 in world rankings, Santos missed the 2018 games (by one spot) in part due to a hand and wrist injury she was dealing with during the Olympic trials but has responded in spades for these games.

With two bronzes and gold in World Cup competitions in the build-up to this one, Santos is skating well at the best possible time coming into these games. Despite no American women securing a medal since 2010, look for Santos to be in contention come the final stretch.
