2022 Winter Olympics Best Bets: Speed Skating (Speed Skating Men 1000m)

Just three days of the 2022 Winter Olympics remain as the closing ceremony is set for Sunday in Beijing. While the games have been eventful thus far, one of the most popular events, the Men’s Speed Skating 1000m will go off early Friday morning in what should be an electric event.

Let’s take a closer look at the field and specifically at the two top favorites for gold.

Thomas Krol [NED]| -150 at DK Sportsbook

Sitting atop the world rankings currently, 29-year-old Thomas Krol has the season’s best recorded time around the 1000m track at 1 minute and 6.44 seconds. Already taking silver in these games in the 1500M event, Krol will look to add Olympic gold to his collection, which is really the only thing left for the elite Dutchman.

With golds under his belt in 2020, 2021, and 2022 European Championships, as well as three golds in the World Single Distance Championships, Olympic gold is the last major championship eluding Krol. With some of the best recorded times of these games thus far in qualifying, I like for him to get it done.

Kjeld Nuis [NED] | +400 at DK Sportsbook

Kjeld Nuis was the reason that gold escaped Krol in the 1500M, as Nuis picked it up in what was his fourth gold in Olympic games. Winning gold in the 1000M and 1500M in the 2018 games, Nuis is the most accomplished skater in this meet.

He also has golds in the World Single Distance Championships, to go along with a long line of silvers and bronzes. Coming into these games with a gold in the 1500M at the European Championships, Nuis is posting some of the fastest times in the world ahead of this race.
