Womens 1500m- Ireen Wust, Netherlands (+800)
While she is not the favorite by any stretch, she is arguably the best women’s speed skater in the history of the Olympics. She has earned 11 medals in her career, five of which were gold, and won this event in both 2010 and 2018. These Olympics are going to be unlike any other, and while Miho Takagi should be right on her tail, give me the experience and pedigree all day long at this price. She will become the first athlete to win gold at FIVE different Olympic games with this as well!
Women’s Mass Start – Irene Schouten, Netherlands (+225)
The betting favorite in a pretty wide-open field is the new 3000m Olympic Record holder Irene Schouten. This was the first speed skating gold medal for The Netherlands, and there is potential for more between her and Thomas Krol. There isn’t much noteworthy competition for her here except for Nana Takagi, the sister of Japanese team captain Miho Takagi. Look for the betting favorite to win by more than the odds suggest!
Men’s 1500m – Joey Mantia, USA (+250)
The American speedskater is in his third Olympics and is the number-one rated men’s skater in the 1500 meters. He is yet to get an Olympic medal, but he has fifteen world cup gold medals and it is believed that this is his best chance to make some noise. He is the odds on favorite, and while he will compete in four events, we all know that he will be completely focused to show he is worthy of that number one rating!
Men’s 500m – Laurent Dubreuil, Canada (+350)
The Canadian is the son of two world-class speedskaters, and he has a chance to win for Canada for the first time EVER from 500m. He has placed in the top three in all eight of his World Cup appearances and appears ready for this moment. He was at the last Winter Olympics and overcame his nerves to have a great season leading up to this event.
