2023 British Open: Head-to-Head Matchup Odds, Picks & Predictions
The last Major of the year is upon us. We’ll have to wait until the azaleas bloom at Augusta National in April to experience the intensity of a Major championship once this week is over. That makes this weekend even more special for golf fans around the world. The best golfers on the planet descend upon Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England, this week in search of the Claret Jug, awarded to the Championship Golfer of the Year at each year’s British Open.
The 7,383-yard, par-71 links style course is littered with fairway bunkers that will have golfers scrambling to make par, lined with fescue that will grab the club shaft in the blink of an eye, not to mention the elements will toy with player’s minds as the wind is expected to be steady all weekend and the rain will intermittently become a factor. Whichever golfers manage those hazards and their own mental game, the best will be celebrated Sunday night. Let’s look at the best options to finish higher on the leaderboard over their opponent.

Brian Harman vs. Keegan Bradley
Bradley is coming off a T-21 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic after an emotional win at the Travelers Championship in his native New England. Bradley has a T-7 in last year’s U.S. Open, so he has the ability to play well in a Major, but this particular Major has not been his friend. The 37-year old has missed three consecutive cuts here, and his best finish in the last decade is T-18.
Harman is having a terrific season. The Georgia native has five top-10 finishes this season, including two in his last three starts. The former Georgia Bulldog seems to have figured out links style golf. He followed up a T-19 in 2022 with a T-6 last year at St. Andrew’s. Look for Harman to make it three straight solid performances across the pond and to best Bradley by the time the tournament is over.
Pick: Brian Harman over Keegan Bradley (-110)
Justin Rose vs. Wyndham Clark
Experience matters at the British Open. Sure, Wyndham Clark is currently fifth in the FedEx Cup rankings. Sure, the Denver native has seven top-10 finishes in 24 starts this season. Sure, he’s a Major champion, having won the U.S. Open just a month ago. But this is a different test. This is links golf. Clark made his debut last year and finished T-76. Not exactly the kind of performance that builds confidence.
Rose, on the other hand, has been playing in this tournament since 1998. The Englishman has made 14 cuts in 19 starts here, including three top-10s and a T-2 just five years ago. Rose grew up on links golf. He knows how to navigate the rolling landscapes. He has a T-9 and a T-16 in two of the other three majors this season. Go with the experienced golfer and back him with confidence.
Pick: Justin Rose over Wyndham Clark (-110)
Robert Macintyre vs. Justin Thomas
It has been a frustrating season for Justin Thomas. Despite the fact the Louisville native has nine top-25 finishes in 17 starts. Thomas has struggled of late. The 30-year-old has missed three of his last six cuts. After a T-9 at the Travelers Championship made some think that the Alabama alum had figured things out, a missed cut and a T-60 have dampened those expectations. Thomas finished T-53 here a year ago and, outside of the T-11 in 2019, has not fared well.
Robert Macintyre is not a name familiar with those stateside. In Europe, though, the Scotland native is making quite a name for himself. The27-year-oldd sits sixth on the Road to Dubai Money List and is coming off a second-place finish at the Genesis Scottish Open. Macintyre has two top-10s and a T-34 in three career appearances in the British Open, which is more than enough to back the Scot this week.
Best of luck this week if you’re tailing! Let’s cash some tickets!
Pick: Robert Macintyre over Justin Thomas (-110)
