There were several high-profile injury situations that occurred on Sunday, including a scare for a pair of the league’s superstars. While the two of them seemed to have escaped major damage, the other significant injuries will significantly affect the Chargers and the Saints on offense.

NFL Injury Updates

Justin Jefferson (WR – MIN)

Late in Sunday’s 28-24 loss to the Chargers, the Vikings’ star wideout came up hobbling out of a route. The Minnesota training staff looked to be stretching out the Offensive Player of the Year’s leg, indicating it could have been just a cramp. It doesn’t seem like anything to be worried about, but keep an eye out for news this week.

Patrick Mahomes (QB – KC)

Every Chief player, coach, fan, and front office member held their collective breath just before halftime of Kansas City’s rout of the Bears when Patrick Mahomes got his ankle rolled up on by Yannick Ngakoue. The reigning NFL MVP continued to play through the injury until the game was out of reach. After the game, Mahomes said he could have finished the game if he had to, so it doesn’t sound like anything to be overly concerned about for now.

Mike Williams (WR – LAC)

Justin Herbert and the Chargers are likely to be without Williams, opposite Keenan Allen. The only question is, how long will that be? The oft-injured Williams missed six games a year ago and could be out for an extended period of time again this season. The wideout, who will turn 29 next week, will have an MRI Monday morning to determine the severity of the knee injury he suffered on a third-quarter play.

Derek Carr (QB – NO)

Carr left the Saints game with the Packers following a hit from Green Bay’s Rashan Gary. The former Raider was taken to a local hospital for X-rays, and it looks like the Saints got some good news. Reports are that Carr suffered a sprain but did not break any bones. The Fresno St. product will likely miss some time, which means Jameis Winston will take over the 2-1 New Orleans offense for the time being.

There are also a few significant injuries to keep an eye on for Monday night’s two-game slate. One of which is looking like a game-time decision.

Joe Burrow (QB – CIN)

The Bengals signal caller re-aggravated the strained calf he hurt back in training camp on last week’s final drive against the Ravens. Burrow was limited in practice this week but did take first-team reps. There’s still a lot of uncertainty around the injury, and even if he does start, there’s a significant chance he could aggravate the calf even more and eventually end up on injured reserve. Tread lightly around the Bengals and Burrow.

DeVonta Smith (WR – PHI)

Smith was also limited in practice this week due to a slight hamstring issue but has been taken off the Eagles injury report and will play Monday night, barring any crazy circumstances.

Puka Nacua (WR – LAR)

The fifth-round rookie has taken the NFL by storm, setting rookie records in his first two weeks thanks in large part to the absence of star wideout Cooper Kupp. Whether Nacua can keep rolling will largely depend on how he can manage the pain of being an NFL receiver. The 22-year-old has taken some shots to the midsection while reeling in 25 of his 35 targets and is listed as questionable with an oblique injury. Rams head coach Sean McVay has said he expects Nacua to play but double-check for any last-minute news just to be safe.
