2023 Wyndham Championship: PGA First-Round Leader Odds, Picks & Predictions

As the calendar turns to August, we turn our focus to the PGA Tour playoffs. The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup rankings will qualify for the FedEx St. Jude Classic next week. That means this week’s Wyndham Championship is the last opportunity for players to get in the playoffs and compete over three weeks for the Tour Championship. For those that don’t, they will turn their attention to the remaining events on the 2023 calendar in hopes of finishing in the top 125. Those players will retain full-time tour status in 2024.

Back to this week’s final regular season event. Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, will once again host the tournament. The Donald Ross design will play 7,131 yards, and par is 70. True to a Ross set-up, the tree-lined fairways and greens that tend to slope away from the surface around the perimeter will force the field to play strategically. The long hitters can find success but won’t be able to rip driver off every tee. The players who are less powerful, like Open Championship winner Brian Harman, can lean on their accuracy to get around the course without getting into trouble. Accuracy will be the name of the game this week. Let’s take a look at who might fare best to start the week.

    Denny McCarthy (45-1)

When you talk about golfers who have had a consistent year, McCarthy’s name should be at the top of the list. The 30-year-old has made 21 of 26 cuts and finished in the top-25 half the time, with six top-tens. The man can roll the rock. The Virginia alum is 3rd in SG: Putting, and 1st on tour Putting Inside 10′. McCarthy fired an opening round 60 at the Travelers Championship just over a month ago, so he has proven he can go low. Expect him to do that again this week.

    Cam Davis (55-1)

If we’re looking for someone who is motivated to play well, look no further than Cam Davis. The Australian currently sits 69th in the FedEx Cup standings, just inside the number to make the field next week. If the 28-year-old wants to stay in the field, he’ll need a solid performance this week. The good news is Sedgefield CC seems to be a course that fits Davis’ game well. In two previous starts here, Davis has finished T-15 and T-22, including an opening round 66 in 2018. That solid history here and the warm, humid weather should make Davis feel right at home.

    Billy Horschel (65-1)

The 2014 FedEx Cup champion has struggled in 2023, but he may have finally found his form again. Is it too late? The Florida Gator sits 116th in the FedEx Cup standings, so he’s motivated to have a huge week. Even if he misses out on the playoffs, Horschel will want to play well so he finishes the year in the top-125 and keeps full tour status next season. This will be the 36-year-old’s eleventh start at the Wyndham, and he has a handful of top-ten finishes, so he’s had success here. Look for Horschel to be in the mix this week.
