2023 Wyndham Championship: PGA Head-to-Head Matchup Odds, Picks & Predictions

There are just two weeks left before the tour's regular season comes to a close and the playoffs begin. The top 70 golfers in the FedEx Cup points standings will make the field for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Names like Justin Thomas and Billy Horschel, who are currently outside the top 70 in the standings, have decided to tee it up for the first time in this event, hoping to play their way into the playoff field.

In order to get there, Thomas and the rest of the field will have to withstand soaring temperatures all week on the 7,341 yard, par 71 TPC Twin Cities course. Aside from the heat, the field will have to deal with smaller greens than they're used to on tour, and several doglegs that will require some strategic play off the tee. The rough at TPC Twin Cities won't be crucial to avoid, so the longer hitters should have an advantage this week. There are some great options on the board this week when you consider all these factors, so let's get to the picks.

      J.J. Spaun vs. Billy Horschel

I’m not sure why J.J. Spaun is such a huge favorite here, but I’m not complaining! While Spaun has had the better season of the two, the San Diego St. Aztec has had trouble navigating Sedgefield. He’s missed three straight cuts here and will be under some serious pressure to play well since the 32-year-old currently sits just inside the playoff number at 67th in the FedEx Cup standings.

Horschel, on the other hand, found something at last week’s 3M Open. The 2014 FedEx Cup champion is motivated to play well. Even if the Florida Gator doesn’t make the playoff field, he still needs a solid finish to the calendar year to keep his full-time status on tour. With a T-13 finish last week and plenty of experience here, including a solo second in 2020, this is a great number to take advantage of this week.

Pick: Billy Horschel over J.J. Spaun (+115)

      Ludvig Aberg vs. Justin Thomas

We’re going right back to the well with this matchup after cashing last week, and we’re going to back the same side again. Justin Thomas may need a break from golf at this point. It seems like the 30-year-old can’t get out of his own way at the moment. Not only is the Alabama alum in danger of missing the playoffs, but his spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team is very much in question. Thomas missed his second cut in a row last week. For the fifth time in seven weeks, he has accomplished that dubious feat. In his three starts here, he has finished no better than T-56.

Aberg, on the other hand, has flourished in his first year as a professional. The Swedish native fired a second-round 64 last week and was in the mix to win his first PGA Tour title before fading a bit over the weekend. Last year's top-ranked amateur has played in eight events since turning professional full-time earlier this year. He's made the cut in all seven here in North America, with the Scottish Open being the only tournament he didn't make the weekend. Aberg should once again finish in front of Justin Thomas this week, and he’s even money to do it.

Pick: Ludvig Aberg over Justin Thomas (+100)

      Adam Schenk vs. Justin Suh

It has been feast or famine for Adam Schenk recently. In his last ten starts, Schenk has missed six cuts. In the four events he made the weekend, the 31-year-old has finished in the top 10. The Purdue alum sits 23rd in the FedEx Cup standings, so he’s not in any danger of missing the playoffs, and he has a horrible history here. Schenk has missed the cut four of five times and finished T-51 the only time he made the weekend.

If you haven’t heard the name Justin Suh much, you will start hearing it more and more. The 2022 Korn Ferry Tour champion seems to have figured things out a bit. The USC Trojan alum has made 24 of 29 cuts this season and has two top-ten finishes. While this will be his first appearance at the Wyndham Championship, backing him at even money against an opponent who has such a miserable history here seems like the smart play.

Pick: Justin Suh over Adam Schenk (+100)
