Argentina vs. Peru

Argentina sits atop the table with six points, outscoring Canada and Chile by a 3-0 margin, punching its ticket to the knockout stages no matter what happens in this match. Meanwhile, Peru has a draw and a loss so far, with a minus-1 goal differential. That means Peru is still very much alive for advancement, but it requires an upset of La Albiceleste. That’s not good.

Peru is likely going to want to get physical with Argentina, trying to use intimidation to win the day. While the defending World Cup champs have been there and done that, it might not be as motivated with its top spot in the table all but secured. Meanwhile, Peru is very hungry.

Across all competitions, Argentina has won 13 times while drawing four times in 18 matches against Peru. Los Incas have managed to win just once against the Argies, winning in 1969, punching their ticket to Mexico in 1970 for the World Cup.

That history is great, but that’s also a long time ago. That was then, this is now, and Argentina is the defending World Cup champ. However, you have to like that Peru has something to play for here and Argentina could potentially rest from key personnel, as manager Lionel Scaloni could go the conservative route. Superstar Lionel Messi reportedly tweaked a hamstring last time out against Chile, so in a meaningless match, it’s unlikely Scaloni has Messi on the pitch, risking a more serious ailment.

Captain Miguel Araujo was lost to a red card in the match against Canada, and he won’t be eligible to face Argentina, which is a tremendous blow to Peru’s chances. Anderson Santamaria is expected to draw in for Araujo. Luis Advincula has been nursing an Achilles’ injury since the Chile match in the first game, and he is also in doubt.

Argentina has posted two clean sheets in two matches, while Peru has failed to score in each of the past four matchups against La Albiceleste. A scoreless draw wouldn’t be shocking here.
