Arizona State 2023 NCAA Tournament Betting Preview

Barely squeaking into the tournament, the conference tournament win over USC may have been the difference for the Sun Devils NCAA Tournament birth. Desmond Cambridge is an awesome 6-4, defensive forward with Devan Cambridge and Warren Washington entering as effective frontcourt interior options. They rebound well, allow nearly nothing in the paint, and will force a high percentage of turnovers.Offensively, Arizona attempts to run in transition but they rank outside the top 270 in both 2pt and 3pt shooting. It will be tough to depend on this team making a deep tournament run, simply because of their inconsitent offense and how they go cold at times. Facing any opponent that can shoot well from beyond the arc will cause problems for this Bobby Hurley led team.

Nevada 2023 NCAA Tournament Betting Preview

Nevada finds itself back in the tournament for the first time under head coach Steve Alford with hopes of suprising people with a deep tournament run. Nevada is an all-around team, with a top-75 offense and a top-50 defense.

The Wolf Pack won’t exactly wow you with their scoring abilities, but they take care of the ball and get to the rim effectively, so they will get shots off at a high rate — something generally beneficial for a tournament run. Defensively, Nevada slows down its opponents, forcing a majority of opposing looks to come from beyond the arc. Nevada rebounds effectively, so second-chance looks won’t be allowed very frequently against this team.

Nevada seemed like a sure tournament team with a couple of weeks to go in the regular season before finishing with losses to Wyoming and UNLV, two sub-75th-ranked teams on KenPom, and San Jose State. The Wolf Pack aren’t exactly playing their best basketball right now. Any fast-paced team has the ability to score in transition against Nevada, which lacks depth as well. I expect the Wolf Pack to play it close with whoever they match up against, but striniging together win after win doesn’t seem all too likely for Steve Alford and Co.

Arizona State vs. Nevada 2023 NCAA Tournament Predictions

Two West Coast teams that struggle to put the ball in the basket will matchup in the First Four finale. Nevada ranks 185th in effective field goal percentage, while Arizona State ranks 311th. This spread is practically a pick em’ for a reason. These two teams are rather resemblant of each other. This isn’t a matchup I looked at and loved right away. And I’m scared to back the Mountain West, considering the conference has struggled in the tournament in recent years. But Nevada has two advantages in this game: they take care of the ball (24th in turnover percentage) and get to the line at the 21st-highest rate in the country. Arizona State is a feisty defensive team that generates turnovers, but they also foul a lot. Arizona State is the better defensive team, but I question their ability to get buckets a bit more than I do Nevada. Regardless, I’ll stay off the side and take the under in a game that could be a slug fest.
