In what’s turning out to be a very close race in the NFC playoffs, the Falcons and 49ers are right on the cusp of make or break with every game from here on out critical. The home 49ers are firmly in the 6th seed ahead of Sunday, but that all will change with a loss.

Overview

Winners of four of their last five, the once left for dead 49ers have turned in one strong performance after another as they’ve surged up the standings. While the offense led by Jimmy Garoppolo has been decent, the defense has done the heavy lifting.

Through 13 games thus far, the 49er’s defense is allowing just 325.4 yards, including 213.2 through the air, per game, putting them in the top eight in both categories.

This season has been the definition of mediocre for the visiting Falcons as they come into Week 15 mainly having alternated wins and losses to this point. It’s also worth noting, their last two wins came against the Panthers and Jaguars, as they pulled out the victory but lost the yardage battle in both.

Bottom Line

If you can even call them a tiger, the Falcons have been a paper one at that as they rank in the bottom 20% of the league in all major offensive and defensive categories. While I’m not huge on trends, it’s also worth noting the Falcons are just 1-5 ATS vs. teams with winning records, showing an inability to compete with the offer half of the league.

I like a rejuvenated and motivated 49ers team to roll in this one.
