Best College Football Bets for New Year’s Day (2022)

The New Year starts with five bowl games kicking off at noon EST and go all the way through to 8:45 PM Est as Baylor takes on Ole Miss. With no shortage of action to choose from, I’ve parsed through the noise to identify the two best spots on the board.

Let’s take a closer look as kickoff approaches.

Iowa-Kentucky Under 44 | -110 at DK Sportsbook

This matchup features two teams that do the same things well; play defense and specifically, defend the run. For the underdog Hawkeyes, this season turned out better than most could’ve ever expected, as they lost just two games en route to the Big Ten Championship game against the Wolverines.

While they ultimately got boat raced 42-3 in that game, the season isn’t lost and the impressive numbers they put up remained. Ranking inside the top 20 in the nation in total yards, rushing yards, and points allowed, the Hawkeyes defense comes into this one poised to get revenge for the Championship Game loss. They also come in with a defense that has been shockingly bad, ranking 96th or worse in points scored, total yards accrued, passing yards accrued, and rushing yards accrued per game.

As for the Wildcats, they’ve also leaned on a top 25 defense though their offense has been as putrid. The offense does run through their rushing game, led by Chris Rodriguez who racked up 1,272 yards this season, and I expect a lot of clock to be eaten up in this one.

Ole Miss -1 | -120 at DK Sportsbook

I’ve had this game circled since the Bowls were announced and it should be a game that does not disappoint. Pitting strength vs. strength, Baylor comes into this one with one of the best defenses in the Big 12 this season, as the Ole Miss offense has come to be one that needs no introduction.

In what will be the final game for both Matt Corral (NFL Draft) and offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby (Oklahoma OC), I expect head coach Lane Kiffin to design a game plan that showcases both’s talents. While Baylor’s defense has been stellar allowing just 19.2 points per game this season, they’ve yet to see anything the likes of the Kiffin-Corral duo and I think we see that playout Saturday night in New Orleans.
