Saturday’s Best College Football Week 6 Bets
No. 7 Penn State vs. UCLA
Expectations and hopes were high for the Bruins when they poached Nico Iamaleava from Tennessee via the transfer portal. But five weeks into the season, it is probably safe to say UCLA has buyer's remorse. The offense is barely scoring two touchdowns a game. The defense can't stop anyone, and Penn State is probably going to take advantage of a Bruins defense that gives up 230+ rushing yards per game.
After losing in double overtime last week to Oregon at home, the Nittany Lions will be looking to make a statement and ice this one early.
Pick: Penn State -24.5 (-105 at Caesars Sportsbook)
No. 9 Texas vs. Florida
Call this one the battle of disappointing quarterbacks. Florida thought they had the next great Gator quarterback in DJ Lagway, but he seems to have regressed after an impressive debut last season. Expectations were unfairly high on Texas signal-caller Arch Manning, which he has certainly not lived up to.
In fairness, Manning has played better against a couple of the lesser teams Texas has played since the loss to Ohio State, so playing a decent Florida defense will be a good test for him. However, even if Manning struggles, the Longhorns’ defense will prevent the Gator offense from gaining any momentum.
Texas will not blow Florida out of the water, though. The first half will likely be an entertaining and relatively close game. But the superior talent and depth of the Longhorns’ defense will take over in the second half. Manning will do enough with the offense to cover the spread.
Pick: Texas -5.5 (-105 at bet365)
No. 16 Vanderbilt vs. No. 10 Alabama
The Nick Saban Era is over; this is no longer the same Alabama team, but it remains one of the top teams in the country. After struggling in the season opener versus Florida State, Ty Simpson appears to have gotten on the same page as his receivers, and the run game is strong as well. Defensively, they look good, not as dominant as years past, but good.
But good may not be good enough to beat Diego Pavia and the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Pavia is one of the most efficient passers in the country (No. 7) and the most efficient one in the SEC (Ty Simpson ranks No. 3). Vanderbilt has a stellar offensive line and a run game that averages 200+ yards a game. The difference in the game will be the defensive line. Vanderbilt will keep Alabama's mediocre run game and check and harass Simpson all day long.
Alabama's defensive line will not cause nearly as much disruption, if any at all.
Vanderbilt could absolutely win this game, and at that price, taking the Vanderbilt Moneyline is definitely worth some serious consideration. But if you are not feeling brave, Vanderbilt will not lose this game by double digits (if they lose at all).
