(Odds and lines via BettingPros’ consensus betting information)
Let’s dive into our top college football picks and leans for Week 4.
Iowa vs. Michigan
This season has been an absolute roller coaster for Michigan. The WMU 'bail-out' win to start the season has been protested and talked about repeatedly. The Wolverines followed that up by beating Oklahoma and seeming to get back on track, but OU's tight home game with New Mexico showed that might not be an impressive win after all. Last week, Michigan had a tale of two halves: a 17-14 lead at halftime, followed by a 35-3 second half against lowly UTEP at home. This game should look similar to the Oklahoma game (17-10), as both teams are less than capable on offense and top-tier on defense. Iowa has been better on offense than in the past, but in the one P4 game they have played, against rival Iowa State, they were held to only 284 total yards and 16 points. The reason we lean toward Iowa is that both teams play slow (Iowa – 92nd in pace, Michigan – 98th), Michigan HC Whittingham has preferred running the ball (31st in rushing play%), and Iowa is actually throwing the ball more than they have in the past 10 seasons (51.1%). Iowa stud RB Kamari Moulton was banged up in the Iowa State game, but they had three different RBs go over 100 yards against FCS Northern Illinois last week; QB Hank Brown is safe with the ball (Iowa +2, Michigan -2), and Iowa is 3rd in Defensive Efficiency. This game will be a gross, low-scoring defensive game, which tends to help the team getting points. We are taking the Hawkeyes and the points in this one.
Pick: Iowa +5.5
USF vs. Bowling Green
This pick is more of a pick against Bowling Green than for USF. The Falcons lost 20-17 to FCS Tarleton State but put up 387 yards, then were bludgeoned by Nebraska 56-7 (167 yards of offense) and Iowa State 55-7 (186 yards). USF QB Michael Van Buren has the fourth-highest passing grade by PFF and zero turnover-worthy plays this season with an offense that is 30th in efficiency. The USF defense has been fairly rough in efficiency (118th), but Bowling Green is dead last at 138th in offensive efficiency. BG QB Jay Kastantin has seven turnover-worthy plays (third most) but only two TOs. This is a game where USF can get back on track defensively. Bowling Green is 116th in 10+ yard plays allowed, 130th in third-down conversions and 138th in red-zone trips. Eddie George was able to fix Tennessee State, but it took him a little time. This roster is brutal and hasn't shown anything to give us confidence. Lay the big total and take the Bulls on the road.
Pick: USF -17.5
Utah vs. Iowa State
Both teams were gutted by HC changes, but Utah had a plan for Morgan Scalley to take over, while Iowa State had to scramble when they brought in Jimmy Rogers from Washington State. Utah lost a decent number of players with Whittingham going to Michigan (55% returning production), but Iowa State was worse, with only 45% coming back. The Cyclones are still 2-1; their only loss was by 3 points to Iowa, but their two wins are against FCS SE Missouri State and the worst FBS team, Bowling Green. Utah's schedule has also been weak, but they are performing better, allowing only 24 points over the first three games, with FCS Idaho's 14 points against them the most they have allowed. The stats have been impressive for the Iowa State run defense, but considering the résumé, Utah's 232.7 YPG should lead them to a decisive win. Utah RB Wayshawn Parker, along with QBs Devon Dampier and Byrd Ficklin, has formed a three-headed attack in the rushing game, and they should run right over Iowa State. When Utah gets up, Iowa State QB Jaylen Raynor will struggle to bring them back, and the defense should make it a long day for him. Utah should win this one going away.
Pick: Utah -8.5
Alabama vs. South Carolina
Alabama has looked GREAT with Keelon Russell under center: 48 points in his first start ever, 45 in his road start, and 50 points against Florida State through a couple of lightning delays. Alabama is 10th in offensive efficiency, 7th in PPG (47.7) and 34th in total offense (465.7) under its new QB, and the offense isn't even moving quickly (104th in pace). South Carolina is moving the ball well, too. Thirty-four points against Mississippi State has been its lowest output, with a 45.3 average, and it is 8th in total yards per game (527.3). LaNorris Sellers isn't playing his best right now but is providing big plays (51 plays of 10+ yards from scrimmage, 27th) while also giving the ball to the opponent with three interceptions. These defenses have played well for the most part, but they are both coming off their worst performances. Alabama allowed 36 points and 471 yards to Florida State in a win, while South Carolina was burned for 393 yards and 41 points by Mississippi State. Top-10 draft prospect Dylan Stewart is probable for South Carolina and can improve, but he was only available for 14 plays and didn't play the entire fourth quarter. Russell seems to be on an unstoppable roll, and Sellers is very experienced, making the over the play in this game.
Pick: Over 53.5
