Delaware Blue Hens at Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

Delaware’s campaign has been a testament to the importance of the quarterback position. The Blue Hens earned a win in two of their first three games, as quarterback Nick Minicucci tallied 814 passing yards and five touchdowns (three interceptions). The senior then suffered a leg injury while sliding against Virginia in Week 4. Delaware went on to lose that contest 42-3, then was defeated by Liberty 30-14 in Week 5. Converting just two out of 13 third downs hindered the Blue Hens’ offense versus the Flames.

Middle Tennessee is also coming off back-to-back losses. The Blue Raiders couldn’t get the job done against Jacksonville State in Week 4 (23-13) or Kansas in Week 5 (55-0). The Jayhawks’ clobbering marked the first time Middle Tennessee was shut out in a game since 2020. Sophomore quarterback Roman Gagliano has succeeded at limiting turnovers, logging one interception on 156 pass attempts. His average of 5.9 yards per completion shows a lack of offensive explosiveness, though.

Minicucci’s status remains up in the air, and even if he suits up, he may not be 100%. It’s a worrisome development for a Blue Hens offense that has averaged a pedestrian 16.3 points over its last four performances. On the other side, the Blue Raiders rank 116th in yards per play (4.7) and 128th in third-down conversion rate (24.5%). Expect a low-scoring battle in Murfreesboro. After all, the under has cashed in five of Delaware’s past six contests overall and in five of Middle Tennessee’s past six home clashes.

Pick: Under 48.5 Points (-110)

Florida International Panthers at Jacksonville State Gamecocks

Let’s shift gears to two teams aiming to extend winning streaks. Florida International defeated Long Island 20-3 in Week 4 and took down New Mexico State 22-3 in Week 6. It was the first time in program history that the Panthers held their opponent to three points or fewer in back-to-back games. Jacksonville State has secured three straight victories. The Gamecocks most recently outlasted Kennesaw State 27-26 in Week 6. Kicker Garrison Rippa drilled a 33-yard field goal with 52 seconds left to seal the deal.

The difference in this duel comes on the defensive side of the ball. Florida International has been phenomenal in the trenches and in the secondary. The Panthers have limited opponents to 81.8 rushing yards per game and 9.8 yards per completion. Those are both top-15 marks among FBS squads. Jacksonville State has not found the same triumphs. The Gamecocks have struggled to get off the field at times, ranking outside of the top 95 teams in opponent third-down conversion rate (47.1%) and takeaways per contest (0.8).

Florida International running back Devonte Lyons is fresh off his best performance, totaling 78 yards on 14 carries (5.6 yards per carry). A dangerous ground attack would go a long way in helping quarterback JJ Kohl settle into a groove. I’ll back the Panthers’ offensive upside over a Gamecocks’ system that relies far too heavily on quarterback Caden Creel. The junior has 46 more carries than any other player on the roster. It’s worth noting that Florida International has covered the spread in each of its previous four conference showdowns.

Pick: Florida International +3.5 (-120)
