Myrtle Beach Bowl: Kennesaw State vs. Western Michigan
Western Michigan is favored to win, and its offense should lean on the run game in a favorable matchup. Kennesaw State's defense struggled to stop the run this year, allowing 175.46 rushing yards per game (102nd in FBS). The Owls also rank 123rd nationally in defensive rushing EPA and 122nd in defensive success rate vs. the run. WMU deploys a run-heavy attack with dual-threat quarterback Broc Lowry playing a key role.
Lowry led the Broncos in rushing this season with 940 yards, including 14 rushing touchdowns, as well. He ended the year especially strong as a runner. Lowry averaged 89.1 rushing yards per game over the last eight games, with 80+ in seven of those eight contests. He also averaged 17.8 rush attempts per game in that stretch.
Let's back Lowry to keep it going in this matchup. Kennesaw State has given up some big games to opposing running QBs. The Owls' defense just allowed 112 rushing yards to Jacksonville State's Caden Creel in the C-USA title game. Against some previous dual-threat guys, they also coughed up 127 rush yards to Creel in a prior meeting, 77 to UTEP's Skyler Locklear, and 62 to Merrimack's Ayden Pereira.
Pick: Broc Lowry Over 82.5 Rushing Yards (Underdog Fantasy)
Gasparilla Bowl: Memphis vs. NC State
When it comes to player props for this bowl game, there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding who will play. Memphis is undergoing a coaching change, which could lead to more players entering the transfer portal than usual. NC State has multiple players who may opt out ahead of the NFL Draft and/or portal entry, namely CJ Bailey and Hollywood Smothers on offense. So, let’s pinpoint a guy who SHOULD be out there for the whole game.
Memphis senior quarterback Brendon Lewis will likely be playing in his final college game tonight. He should have plenty of motivation to go out with a bang, and he faces a subpar NC State defense. The Wolfpack rank 117th nationally in total yards allowed per game and 126th in defensive EPA/Play. They’ve had issues against both the pass and run this year.
Lewis could have a good passing performance, but let’s look at his rushing yards. The dual-threat QB averaged 51.5 rushing yards per game this year, with at least 35 yards in 10-of-12 games. He also averaged 64.6 rush yards per game last season at Nevada. Meanwhile, NC State has struggled against running QBs lately. The defense allowed 76 rush yards to Florida State’s Thomas Castellanos and 103 yards to Georgia Tech’s Haynes King over the past month.
Pick: Brendon Lewis Over 35.5 Rushing Yards (Underdog Fantasy)
College Football Playoff First Round: Alabama vs. Oklahoma
Oklahoma owns one of the best defenses in college football. Even so, Alabama wide receiver Germie Bernard can still be productive enough to go over his yardage prop. The Sooners boast a top-5 rush defense, which should shut down a Crimson Tide run game that's struggled all season to get going. Bama will likely have to rely on its passing attack to move the ball in this matchup.
On that note, Bernard can play a key role in this game as the top target for QB Ty Simpson. He's averaging 63.5 receiving yards and 4.8 receptions per game this year. That includes 60+ yards in eight of 12 games, including four of the last six. He had seven catches for 71 yards against Oklahoma in last month's meeting as well.
The OU defense, despite being strong against the pass overall, has allowed some productive stat lines to opposing receivers recently. Over the past five games, 10 different pass-catchers have eclipsed 60 yards vs. the Sooners. That includes the prior 71 yards for Bernard, 115 for Missouri's Kevin Coleman Jr., 111 yards for Winston Watkins of Ole Miss, and then 70+ yards for a pair of Tennessee wideouts. This 58.5-yard line is a low bar for Bernard, who's been notably more involved than Ryan Williams in the Bama passing game lately.
Pick: Germie Bernard Over 58.5 Receiving Yards (-115 on BetMGM Sportsbook)
