North Carolina at Boston College
When the season looked like it was about to spiral out of control, the North Carolina Tar Heels have gotten back on track. They've won three straight games and are getting strong contributions on defense by EDGE Kaimon Rucker. For over a month, Rucker was out of action and it was hurting the Tar Heels’ defense tremendously. Since he’s returned, the Tar Heels have won three of their past four games (including three straight) and Rucker has five sacks in his last three games. In addition to Rucker, the Tar Heels are led by running back Omarion Hampton.
On the season, Hampton has run for 100 yards in every game but one. He's second in the country in rushing yards with 1,422 yards and 14 touchdowns. Over his last two games, he's been heating up with 416 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 67 carries. The increased workload has led to better production for Hampton, but most importantly, the Tar Heels are winning games.
Boston College is going through a change at quarterback with Thomas Castellanos leaving the team after losing the starting job to Grayson James. James made his first start last week vs. SMU, completing 18-of-32 passes for 237 yards. There could be some improvements as Boston College returns home but this is an Eagles football team that is 1-4 in their last five games.
That makes me lean towards taking the Tar Heels to win and Omarion Hampton to score in this game. After all, Boston College’s run defense got beat up last week by allowing 140 rushing yards on 30 carries and one touchdown. So far this season, they're allowing 130.4 rushing yards per game and have given up 12 rushing touchdowns. In the last four weeks, they've allowed 10 rushing touchdowns, so this is a favorable matchup for Hampton and the Tar Heels.
