Top College Football Odds & Picks: Week 2

BYU vs. SMU

Last week BYU took on the Southern Illinois Salukis. It’s no surprise that the Cougars had success moving the ball and scoring. They managed 11.2 yards per play in the air and put up 41 on their opponents. What was of concern however, was the 4.9 yards per play they gave up on the ground to their FCS foe. BYU will take on an SMU team that is already 2-0 on the season. There was a little concern over the Mustangs after surviving a game against Nevada in Week 0, but a blowout victory that looked impressive on both sides of the ball against Houston Christian helped calm some of those worries. An impressive victory by Nevada over Troy in Week 1 helped too. After struggling in the first half of their first game, they’ve put together six strong quarters. They’re the better team and the line indicates such. At home, I like the Mustangs to roll and cover this double digit spread.

Pick: SMU -10.5 (-110)

Duke vs. Northwestern

Duke was a little bit sluggish in its 26-3 victory against Elon of the FCS in Week 1. It led 3-0 well into the second quarter before a late TD just before half thanks to RB Jaquez Moore. In the 2nd half, it was all Blue Devils, as they fired off 16 unanswered points to give new head coach Manny Diaz his first win in Durham. With :14 left, Elon made a curious move, electing to kick a 39-yard FG. While it’s nice to not get shut out, and apparently that was the thinking, it helped Elon get a much undeserved backdoor cover at +24.5. For Northwestern, it won 13-6 over Miami (Ohio), a good MAC team expected to challenge for a conference championship. The Wildcats were surprisingly stingy on D, allowing just 40 rushing yards on 24 attempts, while sacking QB Brett Gabbert four times. The Wildcats did pick off Gabbert twice, too, but were even in the turnover battle with two fumbles lost. Duke just looks to have a little more explosiveness with Moore, and Texas portal add QB Maalik Murphy. Take the Blue Devils straight up.

Pick: Duke ML (+115)
