College Football Week 5 Early Odds, Picks & Prediction: Old Dominion vs. Liberty

I’m going against my system on this one for two reasons.

Both teams are dealing with significant injuries on offense.

Liberty QB Kaidon Salter missed Saturday’s game against Akron with an ankle injury. The Flames managed to win 21-12 but didn’t even score as many offensive points as they were favored to win by (-26). Salter has returned to practice, and I expect him to start.

But Salters’ mobility – his best asset – will likely be compromised to some degree. And if Salter aggravates that injury, watch out. With Week 1 starter Charlie Brewer injured, Liberty only has the limited Johnathan Bennett behind Salter. Bennett is the one who led last week’s sluggish offensive performance against Akron. Bennett is an FCS-backup quality player.

On the Old Dominion side, RB Blake Watson missed Saturday’s game against Arkansas State with an undisclosed injury. Since the beginning of last season, we’ve seen ODU play up with Watson and play down without him. The Monarchs aren’t addressing Watson’s status, so it’s anyone’s guess when we’ll next see him. I can just tell you that ODU will struggle to move the ball without him. Particularly with a game that will require a heavy dose of running on both sides because….

Current weather forecasts project this game to be played in monsoon conditions. Unless this game is moved to a new location or time, it will likely be the ugliest weather game of the season so far. Forecasts as of Wednesday night are calling for winds between 32-36.5 mph during the game with a 95% chance of rain. There are seasons that go by without a game played in 30 mph winds.

Pick: ODU-Liberty UNDER 41.5

What is Betting Against the Spread?

Betting “against the spread” refers to the act of choosing the winning team based on a numeric handicap placed on the team that oddsmakers believe is superior, rather than picking the outright winner. For example, if the Rams face the Bengals, and oddsmakers set the spread at Rams -3.5, you would need Los Angeles to win by 4 or more points in order to cash your Rams bet.

What is an Over/Under Bet?

Over/Under is a wager based on how many points you think will be scored in a specific game. Oddsmakers set the total, and bettors decide whether the final score will be higher or lower than that number. If an Over/Under is set at 44.5 points and you bet Over, you will need the combined score of both teams to be 45 points or higher to win your bet.

What is a Moneyline Bet?

A moneyline bet involves choosing which team you believe will win a specific matchup. The moneyline favorite carries a minus designation, like -130. This means that you need to wager $130 to earn a $100 profit. Conversely, the underdog carries a plus designation, like +110. This means that you win $110 in profit on a $100 bet.
