Argentina picked up a World Cup championship in 2022, and that came on the heels of a Copa America title in 2021. Now, La Albiceleste is looking for their 16th Copa America title, which would break a tie with Uruguay for the most championships in the history of the tournament. Colombia is searching for its first title since 2001, its only title when it served as the host nation of the tournament.
Argentina breezed by Canada in the semifinals, as Julian Alvarez opened the scoring at 22′, and superstar Lionel Messi notched the insurance goal at 51′, his first of the tournament. The possession battle was rather even, with Argentina holding a slight advantage at 50.7%. Argentina also took 11 shot attempts, while posting three shots on target. That proved to be enough, and Argentina was also very disciplined, too, committing just five fouls, with only one yellow card. Both teams earned two corners in the match. Emiliano Martinez was tasked with making just two saves on nine shot attempts.
Colombia was able to hold off Uruguay by a 1-0 score in full time, as Jefferson Lerma etched his name into the history books for Los Cafeteros with a goal at 39′. Shortly thereafter, however, in stoppage time, Daniel Munoz picked up a red card, and Colombia was forced to play down a man for most of the second half. However, Guillermo Varela was also assessed a red card at 90’+8′ in stoppage time in the match in Charlotte. While the action was great on the pitch, it was ugly in the stands afterward, as players from Uruguay clashed with fans after the loss.
In addition to Lerma’s goal, James Rodriguez picked up an assist, his sixth of the tournament. He is the first South American competitor with six assists at a single major tournament since Brazil’s all-time great Pele was able to pick up six assists in the 1970 World Cup.
Uruguay actually dominated the possession at 61.7%, which is to be expected when playing a majority of the match with a man advantage. Colombia was still able to fire four shots on target, while both sides had 11 total shot attempts apiece. The Colombians managed 13 fouls, while the Uruguayans had 11 fouls, in a rather violent match on and off the pitch.
It was the second straight clean sheet, and the third in four matches, for keeper Camilo Vargas. He wasn’t tasked with a save until 68′ when he turned aside Nicolas de la Cruz, one of just two saves for the Colombian keeper.
It’s hard to envision Argentina faltering in this event, and the fact you can get it on the 3-way line at plus-money is surprising. All La Albiceleste does is win tournaments and pick trophies. Colombia is tough, though, and it won’t be easy. In fact, this might be the most physical opponent Argentina has faced in its recent championship runs. After all, Colombia has managed a 28-match unbeaten streak, a national record for its squad. That streak has to end somewhere, though, and there is no shame in losing to the best.
