Duke 2023 NCAA Tournament Betting Preview

With the Coach K era in the rearview mirror, the Blue Devils ranked seventh in the AP preseason poll. New head coach Jon Scheyer was set to take the helm and lead Duke to another memorable season. But this year has been a mediocre one for Duke. While the Blue Devils did go undefeated at home, they didn’t exactly look spectacular on the road, losing to Virginia Tech and Wake Forest away from Cameron Indoor Stadium. While Duke did finish the regular season on a six-game winning streak, it had some narrow victories during that stretch, including a four-point win at home against Notre Dame.

Despite the talents of Kyle Filipowski and Jeremy Roach, Duke’s offense was mediocre this season. The Blue Devils rank outside the top 50 in offensive efficiency. This is a young team — which, honestly, is the scariest thing about its tournament aspirations. Having four freshman starters does not bode well for a deep tournament run, especially when it gets down to the nitty-gritty of close games late. Duke’s defense is solid, and the Blue Devils rebound the lights out. But the ceiling of this team coming out of a weak ACC seems capped after a season that failed to reach preseason expectations

Oral Roberts 2023 NCAA Tournament Betting Preview

To the benefit of college basketball fans everywhere, Max Abmas and Oral Roberts are back in the NCAA Tournament with their top-25 ranked offense ready to make waves. In 2021, the Golden Eagles were a missed buzzer beater from taking down Arkansas and reaching the Elite 8 as a 15 seed. Now, Abmas and Co. don’t have the benefit of being a sneaky underdog. Fans will actually be in attendance for their tournament games now, and it will be buzzing. As I mentioned, the Golden Eagles have an electric offense with an up-tempo pace and a high preference for perimeter looks. Besides Abmas, they have two sharpshooters in Issac McBride and Kareem Thompson, to go along with big man Connor Banover who has a top-10 block rate in the entire nation. This is a team that a lot of people will simply auto-click through to the second round, but don’t be so quick to take OR as an upset pick.

The Golden Eagles did go 0-4 in Quad 1 games, failing to score over 50 against Houston. Now, all four of those games were on the road, and against some solid opponents, but it’s not as if this team is invincible, despite their 17-game winning streak entering the tournament. Their bottom 100-ranked defense means they are susceptible to shootouts, and a perimeter-based defense would cause trouble. Still, this team has got to be a fan favorite this March, and it would be no surprise at all to see them make it to the second weekend.

Duke vs. Oral Roberts 2023 NCAA Tournament Predictions

The Duke Blue Devils finished the season scorching hot, winning nine in a row en route to the ACC Tournament Championship. But the Blue Devils could get everything they can handle from Oral Roberts. The Summit League champs went to the Sweet 16 in 2021, and top scorer Max Abmas was one of the catalysts from that historic team. The Golden Eagles light it up from the field, ranking 34th in 3-point shooting and 10th along the interior. Oral Roberts is an experienced team that takes care of the ball at the best rate in the country. They will certainly test a Duke defense that has improved drastically down the stretch. Offensively, Duke is also growing, but at a slower rate. The Blue Devils don’t shoot well from the field and rely on crashing the offensive glass, where they rank eighth. Oral Roberts isn’t an elite defensive team, but they are a decent defensive rebounding team and defend without fouling. I’m not sure Oral Roberts has enough to knock off the 5th-seeded Blue Devils, but they should give Duke a scare. I’ll take Oral Roberts at +7 or better, as well as the over.
