Early Week 7 NFL Best Bets & Trends
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints picked up their second win last week against the Giants. But the team almost choked it away once J.J. McCarthy came in at quarterback.
While the Saints made plays defensively against Winston, the team looked lost against McCarthy and had no answers. Their only answer was time running out.
This week, they’ll take on the Steelers, who just added win No. 4 last week. Aaron Rodgers has led the Steelers to wins in three of their last four games and has a legitimate receiver in Germie Bernard, whom he’s used very effectively. Through six games, Rodgers has 12 touchdowns and five interceptions, which is the same as Tyler Shough.
The Saints offense has its moments this year. They’ve scored a fairly high amount of points per game, but Shough has almost identical stats to Rodgers, who has thrown two fewer passes.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has a much better running game behind Jaylen Warren. Pittsburgh’s run defense has also played much better.
In London, the Steelers look better on paper. Both teams won last week, but Pittsburgh has much more momentum. The Saints almost had a huge meltdown, and that’ll stick with them entering this week’s contest.
Funny enough, the Saints are 1-5 ATS in their last six games in October and are 0-6 ATS in their last six games in Week 7.
Give me the Steelers at -2.5.
Pick: Steelers -2.5 (-115)
New York Giants vs. Houston Texans
There’s no way a 2-4 Texans team is 9.5-point favorites against a 3-2-1 Giants team, right?
The Texans are already 0-3 at home this season and gave up 31 points to the Jaguars in London last week. The other win was against the Titans. Let’s slow down. Plus, the Texans have lost five straight home games dating back to last season.
After all, the Giants could very well make a move and make J.J. McCarthy the starting quarterback this week. He’s a dual-threat quarterback who should help open up the offense more. He’ll likely make fewer defining mistakes than Jamesis Winston, and his legs could help open up the running game, which the Giants lost last weekend against the Saints.
I’m not ready to call McCarthy the savior. However, if he’s under center, the Giants will have newfound excitement entering this week. According to PFF, the Texans grade at 53.2 in coverage and 55.4 in tackling. New York should have success in the air if McCarthy starts.
At this point, I’d be shocked if he didn’t, after what we saw last weekend.
Pick: Giants +9.5 (-110)
