How to Make Golf Prop Bets at a Sportsbook

While betting on golf is far from new, the sheer amount of golf prop bets that have hit the market can appear overwhelming. No longer do we only have outright bets to dissect each week, but a plethora of new markets have cropped up over the past years as legalized sports betting has swept the country.

Let’s take a closer look at a few golf prop bet markets to consider when making your next golf bet.

Make/Miss Cut Bets

This one is as straightforward as it sounds and focuses on whether Player A will make (or miss the cut). As you would assume, the week’s favorites often are laying massive juice that they will make the cut, sometimes as high as -10000, making it a terrible bet in almost every case.

Guys in the middle of the pack, however, or potentially those under the radar in terms of the true level of play, can offer value for those who dig deep enough. The same goes for players playing terribly, as bettors can have a value for them to miss the cut in a given event.

Head-to-Head Bets

Just like we see in other sports, head-to-head bets pit Player A vs. Player B to see who finishes higher in each tournament. You can also make head-to-head first-round bets that focus on just the first round and who finishes higher.

Most of the time, to eliminate weather advantages and make the odds close to even, players in the same group or 1-2 in either direction will be paired head-to-head against one another. While most of the time, the odds are straight up, I’ve also seen head to head that lay a spread (1.5 strokes) in either direction.

Top Finish Bets

Like traditional outright betting, top-finish bets are all about where you finish an event. However, unlike the outright betting markets, top finish bets just require a given golfer to finish in the top 5, 10, 20, or 40 of an event to win the bet.

As you would expect, the odds are correlated with the outright markets as the event’s favorites are often heavy favorites to finish in the top 40 of an event. To be successful in top finish bets, you’ll want to key in on players flying under the radar on a week-to-week basis or those who have a strong course history at the week’s course.
