Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans Odds & Game Pick

There’s clearly no quit in the Tennessee Titans. After opening the season with a 2-4 record, they’ve won three of their last four – mostly thanks to a switch from Marcus Mariota to Ryan Tannehill at quarterback. Tennessee is suddenly right back in the fight for first place in the AFC South and have another winnable game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in front of them on Sunday afternoon.

Tennessee had won four in a row against the Jaguars before falling 20-7 in Jacksonville earlier this season. However, with the Jaguars in a funk right now, the Titans have a good opportunity to get some revenge.

Overview

Jacksonville’s Week 3 win over the Titans was surprising in more ways than one. First, the Jaguars had lost four in a row against Tennessee. Second, Jacksonville was just 1-7 in its previous eight matchups versus AFC South opponents. Third, the Jaguars were coming off back-to-back losses to open the year, and nobody had any idea what Minshew Mania was at the time. Fast-forward nine weeks later, and it will be Nick Foles back under center for Jacksonville. Foles threw for 296 yards and two touchdowns with an interception in last week’s 33-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Running back Leonard Fournette ranks third in the NFL with 1,183 scrimmage yards this season. However, Foles and Fournette couldn’t lead the Jaguars to more than 13 points in last week’s loss to Indianapolis – seven of which came on the opening drive. Will they be able to improve on that point total against a Titans’ defense that has held opponents to 19.7 points per game this season?

Meanwhile, the biggest reason for Tennessee’s turnaround has been the play of quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill has thrown for 1,136 yards and eight touchdowns with a 104.4 passer rating since taking over for Marcus Mariota. It’s no secret that he has performed much better at the position in a limited sample size. Meanwhile, the Titans will likely look at what Colts running back Jonathan Williams was able to do versus Jacksonville last week and try to duplicate it with Derrick Henry. Williams had a career-high 147 scrimmage yards. Henry is coming off a season-high 188 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a Week 10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Henry should get a ton of touches against the Jaguars at home this week.

Trends

  • Jacksonville is 4-7-1 ATS in last 12 road games
  • Jaguars are 2-9 SU in last 11 vs. AFC South opponents
  • Titans have won 4 of last 5 meetings SU
  • Tennessee has won 5 straight head-to-head meetings at home
  • Titans are 2-0-1 ATS in last 3 home games overall

Bottom Line

While Foles might be the more complete, experienced option at quarterback for Jacksonville, he is also clearly rusty after missing almost the entire season to date following a Week 1 injury. And this offense is limited beyond him as displayed in their loss to Indianapolis last week. They need some kind of a spark, and they were hoping Foles would provide it, but he didn’t. Absent of that catalyst, it’s difficult to imagine them playing much better.

The Titans have turned their season around and will continue to play with a level of urgency coming off their bye week entering another key AFC South showdown. While the line has moved to the key number three, they look like the right side in this game.

Prediction: Tennessee 24, Jacksonville 19
