MLB Best Bets, Picks & Predictions: Sunday (5/28)

Sundays are for the early birds! We’ve got a fun-filled slate in the MLB that will start at 11:35 AM EST with the Dodgers-Rays matchup.

Don’t worry, I won’t be betting on that game. I’ve got other games in mind. But the thought of having baseball throughout the day is awesome.

Here are a couple of bets to consider for today’s MLB slate.

Houston Astros vs. Oakland Athletics

Let’s pick on the Athletics for a second.

Oakland is 10-44 on the season and will send Luis Medina to the mound. Medina has a 0-3 record with a 6.45 ERA. He’s also holding an xFIP of 4.34 over the last 30 days. Medina has struck out just 18.8% of batters and has allowed 25% of line drives over the last 30 days.

He’s also allowed an ISO of .294 to his last 37 lefties and a .323 ISO to his last 32 righties. The Astros should earn plenty of extra-base hits.

On the other hand, Cristian Javier will man the mound for the Astros. He’s struck out over 30% of batters in the last month and has walked only 6%.

He’ll face an Oakland lineup with a .280 wOBA against righties in the last month. The Athletics aren’t patient at the plate and are averaging a below-average ISO of .147 against righties as a projected lineup.

I’ll back the Astros -1.5.

Bet: Astros -1.5 (-154)

Miami Marlins vs. Los Angeles Angels

Eury Perez will get the call for the Marlins today. Perez has a 4.02 xFIP over the last 30 days with 27.1% of strikeouts. Perez also has a BABIP of .235 and has held righties to a wOBA of .219. He’s struggled slightly against lefties, allowing a wOBA of .386 to his last 32 lefties.

However, the Angels will likely only have four lefties in the lineup. They’ll have more righties at-bat against Perez, despite Perez being a right-handed pitcher.

The Angels’ projected lineup has struck out 26.8% of the time and has walked only 5.6% against righties in the last month. Perez should be able to earn high strikeouts in today’s game.

Meanwhile, Patrick Sandoval will take the mound for the Angels. He’s holding a 3.47 ERA on the season. Although he won’t earn many strikeouts, he’s still executed his pitches well. He’s earned 52.6% of ground balls and has limited line drives to under 20% over the last 30 days.

The Marlins are walking just 4.8% of the time against lefties over the last month and have hit only 18.5% of line drives in that same time frame.

Sandoval has kept his wOBA and ISO down against lefties and righties in the last month. It will be difficult for Miami to find much offense against Sandoval.

Let’s back the Under 8.

Bet: Under 8 (-104)
