Sunday's Best MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Picks
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Chicago White Sox (+178) vs. Toronto Blue Jays (-220) | O/U 9.0 (-102/-119)
Starting Pitchers: Adrian Houser vs. Chris Bassitt
The Blue Jays (41-35) bounced back with a 7-1 victory over the White Sox (24-53) yesterday, forcing a matinee rubber match on Sunday. Adrian Houser gets the nod for Chicago, while Toronto counters with Chris Bassitt. First pitch is scheduled for 1:37 p.m. ET from the Rogers Centre in Toronto, ON.
The NRFI is 0-2 in this series, but that's a trend I anticipate ending this afternoon. Bassitt has been solid this season with a 3.75 ERA (42nd) and a 1.30 WHIP (53rd). The right-hander has held Chicago's current lineup to a slash line of .217/.265/.348 over 46 at-bats. The Sox continue to be one of the worst offenses in the Majors. Over the last seven days, they're 27th in wOBA (.281) and 22nd in ISO (.153).
As for Toronto, they're running into Houser, who has been excellent for the Southsiders in 2025. In five starts (29.1 innings), the right-hander has logged a 2.15 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Toronto's key top-of-the-lineup hitters, Bo Bichette (0-for-6) and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (1-for-6), are a combined 1-for-12 (.083) against Houser.
Bet: NRFI (-105)
Kansas City Royals (-113) vs. San Diego Padres (-107) | O/U 8.5 (-105/-116)
Starting Pitchers: Seth Lugo vs. Randy Vasquez
The Royals (38-39) had their four-game winning streak snapped against the Padres (41-35) last night, and they'll turn to Seth Lugo to try and get back in the win column today. San Diego opts for Randy Vasquez in this Interleague clash, which is slated for 4:10 p.m. ET from Petco Park in San Diego, CA.
These two squads have been profitable to the NRFI this season, so I'll gladly take a +105 flier to say that this game remains scoreless after the first inning. The Royals are the second-best NRFI team in the Majors at 48-29 (62%), while the Padres are eighth at 41-35 (54%). Vasquez draws a matchup against a Kansas City side that's a modest 18th in wOBA (.306) over the last seven days. They're also 20th in first-inning scoring this season, scoring only 0.43 runs per first inning.
As for San Diego, they'll take on Lugo (3.05 ERA), and he has had the Padres’ number in the past. The Padres are slashing just .195/.283/.317 against him over 41 at-bats. That includes their big guns at the top of the order in Fernando Tatis Jr. (0-for-1), Luis Arraez (1-for-3) and Manny Machado (1-for-6), who are a combined 2-for-10 (.200) against Lugo. Give me the NRFI in San Diego this afternoon.
Bet: NRFI (+105)
Washington Nationals (+243) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (-309) | O/U 9.5 (-112/-109)
Starting Pitchers: Michael Soroka vs. Shohei Ohtani
Let's wrap things up in L.A., where the Nationals (32-45) square off against the Dodgers (47-31) in a rubber match. Washington gives Soroka the nod, while Shohei Ohtani is set to take the ball for Los Angeles. First pitch is set for 4:10 p.m. ET from Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA.
Ohtani conceded a run in his one-inning debut against the Padres on Monday, but I do like him to bounce back against an underwhelming Nationals team at home today. He'll take on a Washington lineup that's scoring only 3.5 runs per game during their current 2-12 stretch of play.
As for the bottom half of the frame, we have Soroka and his 5.06 ERA trying to slow down a star-studded Dodgers lineup. Luckily, he has dominated them in the past. Los Angeles is slashing .205/.300/.227 against the right-hander over a sample size of 44 at-bats. Shohei Ohtani (0-for-0, one walk), Freddie Freeman (0-for-1) and Teoscar Hernandez (1-for-6) are a combined 1-7 (.143) against Soroka. Let's take a flier on the NRFI in this game.
