Sunday’s Best MLB Picks & Bets

(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)

Baltimore Orioles vs. Athletics

The Baltimore Orioles will give Tomoyuki Sugano the start today. The Orioles right-handed pitcher isn’t adding a high number of strikeouts. However, he’s limited his walks to below 4% this season. He’s also allowed just a .283 wOBA over the last month with 44.6% of ground balls.

Sugano will also battle an Athletics lineup that has five batters hitting a wOBA of no better than .263 over the last 30 days. The Athletics have some power in the top of the lineup, but Sugano is only giving up power to lefties at a high rate. That leaves just Lawrence Butler and Tyler Soderstrom as the two main bats. The other seven bats don’t have great matchups against Sugano.

On the other hand, Jacob Lopez will get the ball for the A’s. He’s struck out 29.3% of batters over the last 30 days. Yet, he’s also allowed a .358 ISO and wOBA of .407 with 13.9% of ground balls and 50% of fly balls. Lopez is racking up strikeouts against righties, as a left-handed pitcher, but he’s still given up 29% of line drives with 41.9% of hard contact.

Lopez will certainly add some strikeouts, but if any Orioles bats connect, it will be trouble. Baltimore’s lineup should have at least four batters with an ISO of at least .217 in the lineup. The Orioles also have five batters who have struck out below 18.5% of the time over the last 30 days against lefties. Baltimore stacks up better on the road.

Pick: Orioles Moneyline (-144)

Atlanta Braves vs. San Francisco Giants

It hasn’t exactly been the start Spencer Strider was looking for since returning to the Braves’ rotation. He’s allowed a .294 ISO and wOBA of .402 and has added just 23% of strikeouts.

But if there were ever a time for Strider to break out, it would be today. He’s taking on a San Francisco Giants projected lineup that has hit a .130 ISO and wOBA of .307 with nearly 21% of strikeouts over the last 30 days. Only Heliot Ramos and Matt Chapman have hit an ISO better than .143 against righties over the previous month.

On the other hand, Landen Roupp will start for the Giants. His strikeouts have been low over the last month. Yet, he’s still held his previous 116 batters to a .095 ISO and woBA of .281. Roupp is earning nearly 49% of ground balls and hasn’t allowed many fly balls, either.

Roupp will battle a Braves’ lineup that has six batters hitting an ISO of no better than .134. Atlanta also has five batters who have struck out at least 23.1% of the time against righties over the last month.

Yesterday’s game was low-scoring. This one should be, too.

Pick: Under 7.5 Runs (-102)
