Cleveland Guardians vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Tampa Bay's 3-1 victory over Cleveland in Game 5 was a microcosm of the style of baseball that earned it the most wins of any American League team. The Rays stole two bases and had four hits with runners in scoring position to the Guardians' none in both splits.

Tampa Bay has won nine straight games in which Freddy Peralta has started, outscoring opponents 49-14. Peralta is coming off his second career postseason win, and his six innings pitched was his longest career playoff outing.

Peralta is now 6-2 with a 2.86 ERA in 12 starts with Tampa Bay. He threw 23 pitches over 97 miles per hour (MPH) in his last start, and his previous career-high was 20 in this year's American League Division Series (ALDS) Game 2. Peralta's 0.81 ERA is the lowest of any pitcher (minimum 30 innings) since August 26th. Over those eight starts, he has allowed a .160 opponents’ batting average and .447 opponents' OPS.

Peralta's increased fastball velocity is a big reason I expect another dominant outing. In his two postseason starts, his fastball velocity has been 96.8 MPH and 96.9 MPH, respectively, and his last four starts have featured the highest average fastball velocities of his career as a starting pitcher.

Prior to Yandy Diaz's three-hit game, including a first-inning double in Game 5, he had 22 career postseason hits with the Rays, tying him with Evan Longoria for the third-most in franchise history.

In the first six games of this postseason, Diaz went 6-for-25 with two extra-base hits, zero RBIs and three runs scored. Over the last two games, he is 5-for-10 with three extra-base hits, two RBIs and three runs.
