MLB Same Game Parlays & Picks: Monday (10/5)

Since there were no MLB playoff games last Monday, you’d have to go back to my MLB same-game parlays (SGPs) column from September 21st to find one of my biggest SGP cashes of the season, a +949 three-leg same-game parlay involving the Blue Jays and Orioles. With those profits in the bankroll, I’m getting aggressive with another two-pack of SGPs from each of the American League Division Series (ALDS) Game 2 matchups today.

Let’s dive into the best MLB SGPs for Monday, October 5th.

Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians

Chicago finds itself as road underdogs once again, despite going 9-2 in its last 11 games overall and never trailing this postseason. Cleveland struggled to generate offense in the Game 1 loss, going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and leaving seven men on base. It was the Guardians' first shutout loss in 11 playoff games. I cannot confidently back the Guardians at this price, especially since they went just 1-3 in Gavin Williams' four starts against the White Sox this season, with a -7 run differential.

Steven Kwan entered the playoffs amid an 18-game on-base streak. His hot stretch began long before that, as he led the Majors in batting average (.353) and on-base percentage (.443) after the All-Star break among those with at least 200 plate appearances. Kwan has played in three games with Anthony Kay toeing the rubber and is 0-for-5 with two strikeouts in six total plate appearances. Kay has also been devastatingly tough on left-handed batters, holding them to a .183/.247/.257 triple slash line and just eight extra-base hits all season.

Miguel Vargas had great numbers against Cleveland in the regular season, posting a .424 on-base percentage with six extra-base hits and 10 RBI. He has a .429/.471/.643 triple slash line with a home run in 14 career at-bats against Williams. In addition, Vargas' 1.113 OPS against the righty is the second-highest among players on today's slate against today's opposing pitcher (minimum 10 plate appearances).

      Parlay Odds: +1984

New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Since I went so aggressively on three plus-money legs of the first SGP that would return a massive +1984 payout, I am going more conservatively with a two-leg SGP in this American League East tilt.

Likely American League Cy Young Award winner Cam Schlittler had a great game plan in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card (ALWC) series against the Red Sox. Boston came into the game batting an MLB-worst .184 against curveballs in the regular season, and Schlittler threw his curve 27.4% of the time in that start, up from 9.8% in the regular season. That was the highest usage of his curveball in a single start in his career. Thus, I trust the Yankees’ analytics department to devise a plan for Schlittler to keep Tampa Bay off balance, much as he did when he posted a 2.81 ERA against the Rays in 16 innings this season.

I also expect Freddy Peralta to match zeros early and often, especially after being named the American League Pitcher of the Month in September. Over Peralta’s last five starts, he is 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA in 28 innings pitched, and logged a 7.4 K/9 rate and 0.89 WHIP. Meanwhile, the Yankees’ offense was lifeless in Game 1 as Tampa Bay recorded its fourth postseason shutout in team history, following a regular season in which it pitched 13 shutouts (tied for the fourth-most in the American League).

      Parlay Odds: +244
