MLB Same Game Parlays & Picks: Monday (7/20)

All 30 Major League Baseball teams are in action on Monday’s loaded 15-game slate coming out of the All-Star break, and that gives me plenty of data for my top two MLB same game parlays (SGPs). I focus on a possible National League Championship Series (NLCS) preview and an Interleague matchup between two teams heading in opposite directions.

Let’s dive into the two best MLB SGPs for Monday, July 20th.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Philadelphia Phillies

With my Phillies Moneyline wager, I am bucking the trend that the Dodgers are 4-0 straight up (SU) as underdogs this season. But that is the respect I’m giving Cristopher Sanchez when pitching at home, and Philadelphia has a +35 run differential in his last seven outings at Citizens Bank Park.

Cristopher Sanchez at home has been one of the surest things in baseball this season. The Phillies are 9-2 in his 11 home starts, while the lefty has pitched to a minuscule 0.86 ERA with a .188 opponents’ batting average at Citizens Bank Park.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto eased several concerns about overuse from the Dodgers’ bullpen in yesterday's doubleheader with his 102-pitch complete game. Thus, one shouldn't expect the need for an extended outing from Emmet Sheehan, which lowers his ceiling for strikeouts.

Sheehan faces a Phillies lineup ranked 16th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching since June 15th. Philadelphia is slightly worse in that metric at home (18th) in that same time frame. Philadelphia has a path to knock out Sheehan early thanks to its top-five wOBA, wRC+ and OPS.

From June 15th to yesterday, Philadelphia had the best ISO (.235) and HR/FB rate (18.9%) against right-handed pitchers in the Majors at home. Trea Turner alone ranked 32nd in that split with a .394 ISO. He also did not compromise any of his slash line numbers despite being a much more free swinger (2.9% walk rate), as he slashed .364/.400/.758.

Turner has been elevating the ball much more over the last month, with a 40.7% fly-ball rate to go with his above-average 40.7% hard-hit rate.

      Athletics at Arizona Diamondbacks

Entering Sunday, Arizona had won five of its last six games, with a great blend of offense (5.8 runs per game) and pitching (2.50 ERA) over that span. The Diamondbacks face an Athletics team that snapped a 10-game losing streak by scoring its most runs of the season (15) while getting a no-hit bid from starter J.T. Ginn into the sixth inning.

I give the Diamondbacks a big edge in this matchup while playing in their much preferred split facing a southpaw. Arizona is 15-7 in games started by left-handed pitchers as opposed to 36-41 against righties. Its win/loss success is a by-product of its ranking fifth in wRC+, second in slugging rate, fifth in wOBA and in the top 10 in batting average on balls in play (BABIP) against left-handed pitchers.

Since I expect a Diamondbacks victory led by their offense, I am backing the under on Jeffrey Springs’ strikeout total, as Arizona strikes out at the lowest rate in the Majors against southpaws (16.7%). Springs has only recorded 32 strikeouts over 43.1 road innings this season.

And even though Ketel Marte is 0-for-3 in his career against Springs, he has better slash line numbers in every category against left-handed pitchers (.299/.346/.588). He has scored 20 runs in just 97 at-bats against southpaws, and I expect him to score at least one run for the seventh time in 15 games this month.

      Parlay Odds: +397
