San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks are set to pitch  Ryne Nelson. The righty has really struggled against lefties to begin the season, allowing a .271 ISO and a wOBA of .330 to 53 lefties this year. Those lefties have also hit over 68% of hard contact and 31.6% of fly balls. Those lefties also struck out only 18.9% of the time since last year. San Diego should have at least three lefties in the lineup and potentially more.

Jackson Merrill is the big lefty for the Padres. He’s hit a .210 ISO and a wOBA of .341 against righties since last season. During that stretch, he’s socked 30.5% of fly balls and 53.9% of hard contact. This is a good matchup for Merrill.

Meanwhile, Michael King has added only 23% of strikeouts this season. He’s got low strikeouts and high walks, while giving up almost 45% of hard contact and a barrel percentage of 10.4%. Arizona’s projected lineup has struck out in fewer than 21% of situations. They’re an aggressive bunch and look to put the ball in play early.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Kansas City Royals

The Angels will send out Reid Detmers for tonight’s game against the Kansas City Royals. Detmers has struck out nearly 26% of batters this season and will face a Royals lineup that has struggled against lefties all season long. The lineup has hit a .108 ISO with a wOBA of .296, along with almost 23% strikeouts. Detmers should be able to get deep into this game, allowing him to get at least six strikeouts.

On the other hand, Seth Lugo will get the call for the Royals. Lugo has been a bit lucky against right-handed pitching so far. I’m not sure it’ll last much longer. He’s allowed 37.5% of fly balls, a 9.4% barrel percentage, and has given up almost 47% of hard contact to righties. However, he’s allowed just a .156 BABIP against righties, despite adding only 19.5% of strikeouts against righties.

Mike Trout and Jorge Soler have had really good numbers against right-handed pitching to begin the season. Trout even has a 23.5% barrel percentage against righties, while Soler has hit 59.5% of hard contact.
