New York Knicks vs. Boston Celtics
The opening tip in tonight’s Knicks-Celtics game will be between Karl-Anthony Towns and Kristaps Porzingis. Ultimately, Porzingis won the tip in 80% of his starts this season and helped the Celtics score first 62% of the time. Meanwhile, the Knicks only scored first 46% of the time this season. At home, the Celtics will likely win the tip and get the first shot attempt.
Ultimately, the Knicks have allowed the first basket to small forwards 32% of the time this season. Boston’s small forward tonight will be Jaylen Brown, who has already scored the first basket 14 times in 70 starts. Brown has added the team’s first basket in 30% of games this season and attempted the team’s first field goal in 31% of games this season.
Brown also led the team in first baskets during the regular season. Tatum had 11 and Porzingis finished with 10. Therefore, I’ll side with Brown to score first tonight.
Pick: Jaylen Brown (+430)
Denver Nuggets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder
Nikola Jokic and Isaiah Hartenstein competed for the tip in one game this season. Jokic won it. That’s the likely outcome in this matchup moving forward.
After all, Jokic won the tip in 61% of games this season while Hartenstein won the tip in only 22% of games. In addition, the Nuggets scored the first basket 55% of the time this year, while the Thunder added the first basket in 51% of games. Despite being on the road, the Nuggets have an edge to start this game.
Oklahoma City has allowed the first basket to centers 33% of the time. Conversely, Nikola Jokic led the Nuggets with 16 first baskets in the regular season. He also took the team’s first basket in 34% of games started and added the first field goal attempt for the Nuggets in 39% of games.
We’ll need Jokic to do it all to start this game. But I’m sure he’ll be up to the challenge. Take Jokic to score first.
Pick: Nikola Jokic (+750)
