Houston Rockets vs. Los Angeles Lakers

Amen Thompson has scored at least 18 points in three of his last four games. He’s averaged more than 38 minutes per game in the previous 10 games and has attempted 13.3 shots per game during that stretch. In addition, Thompson has shot 56.3% over the last 10 games and has averaged about four free throws made. Tonight, he’ll battle a Lakers team ranked dead last in points allowed to small forwards. The Lakers also rank dead last in free throws made by small forwards. Look for Thompson to take advantage.

Meanwhile, Jabari Smith Jr. has recorded at least 16 points in three consecutive games. He’s also averaged more than 37 minutes per game and has taken about 13.4 shots per game. His field goal rate is weaker than Thompson’s, but he’s still hit nearly 46% of his shots over the last 10 games. Ultimately, the Lakers rank 26th in points allowed to power forwards. Los Angeles is also dead last in three-pointers and three-point field goal rate against power forwards. That checks out for Smith.

Reed Sheppard has grabbed no more than two rebounds in three straight games. He hasn’t even had more than five rebound chances in six of his last seven games. With that said, he’s facing a Lakers team ranked No. 1 in the NBA in rebounds allowed to point guards. It’s unlikely Sheppard will get many opportunities to do damage on the glass.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Denver Nuggets

Julius Randle added 25 points against the Knicks last time out. He saw a nearly 32% usage rate and played over 33 minutes in that one. This season, he’s scored at least 22 points in 53% of games. He’s also secured at least 22 points in five of his last seven games against the Nuggets, averaging 23.1 points per game during that stretch. Randle will face a Nuggets squad ranked 28th in field goal attempts and field goals made by power forwards. If Randle continues shooting with the same volume, he’ll likely get to at least 22 points.

While Randle could be the leading scorer for the Timberwolves, Jamal Murray has a chance to do the same for the Nuggets. He’s scored at least 27 points in four of his last five games and has played about 34 minutes a night over his last 10 games. Murray should also get plenty of field-goal attempts against a Timberwolves team ranked 28th in field goals attempted by point guards. Murray has taken almost 18 shots per game over the last 10 games. He is shooting over 49% from the field and 52.6% from three-point range during that time.

Tim Hardaway Jr. has been on fire lately, scoring at least 21 points in back-to-back games. But I fear he’s about to cool off. The Timberwolves rank No. 1 in the NBA in field goal rate allowed to shooting guards. They give nothing easy to shooting guards. Hardaway has taken at least 12 threes in back-to-back games, but it’s unlikely he’ll get anywhere close to that volume tonight.
