New York Jets at Seattle Seahawks Odds and Game Pick (2020)

Two teams whose win-loss records are at totally opposite ends of the spectrum will clash on Sunday afternoon in the Pacific Northwest when the New York Jets travel to take on the Seattle Seahawks. The Jets will continue their hunt for their first win of the 2020 season while the Seahawks are desperate to get back in the win column as the NFC postseason race heats up. The betting odds heavily favor the home team for this contest.

Overview

The Jets’ miserable season somehow got even worse last week when they lost on a Hail Mary touchdown catch by Henry Ruggs with just five seconds left. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was canned the following morning, calling into question just how the stronger of New York’s two primary units (which isn’t saying much) will respond this coming week. The Jets will also likely be without both running back Frank Gore (concussion) and rookie wideout Denzel Mims, who had to leave the team for a personal matter during the week. Jamison Crowder, Breshad Perriman, and Ty Johnson will make up the supporting cast for disgruntled QB Sam Darnold on Sunday.

The Seahawks will be looking to bounce back from being on the wrong end of a massive upset last weekend. Russell Wilson’s MVP case is long gone, but he and the rest of the Seattle offense couldn’t ask for a much better get-right opponent than the Jets. D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett should have no trouble taking the young Jets corners to school. The Seahawks have been playing much better defensively since acquiring Carlos Dunlap and getting Jamal Adams back from injury. Of course, Adams will have no trouble getting up for this revenge game spot against his former team.

Trends

  1. Jets 2020 Betting Trends: 4-8 ATS; 6-6 to the Over
  2. Seahawks 2020 Betting Trends: 6-6 ATS; 6-6 to the Over
  3. The outright winner has also covered ATS in each of the last five head-to-head meetings between the Jets and Seahawks (Seattle has won the last three times).
  4. The Jets are 4-2 ATS in their last six games but only 1-4 ATS on the road this season.
  5. The Under has cashed in each of the Seahawks’ last four games.

Prop Bet

Jets First Half Team Total: Over 7.5 (+125 at BetMGM)

Contrary to recent for the Seahawks and general season-long form for the Jets, I’m predicting a decent number of points in this game from both sides. The Seahawks figure to come out hot as they look to rebound from a brutal offensive performance last week. If that is the case, the Jets could be forced to throw the ball early and often even before halftime. Jamison Crowder and Breshad Perriman are both fine receivers. If Sam Darnold can simply locate them when open, I think New York is capable of putting together at least two first half scoring drives. Only one has to be a touchdown to hit the over on 7.5. And while Adam Gase isn’t known to go for two on a whim, crazier things have happened.

Bottom Line

The only line movement to note for this matchup concerns the point spread. The Seahawks opened as 15-point home favorites in what many anticipate being a lopsided affair. Sharp money gobbled up the two-touchdown line, moving it as low as Seattle -13.5 before some buyback came to level it off at an even 14.

Even in a prime bounce-back spot against the worst team in the NFL, I have a hard time rushing to lay two full touchdowns with the Seahawks here, especially given their recent form. At the same time, the Jets have been horrible on the road under Adam Gase. I could easily see a putrid showing this week after the heartbreak of last Sunday’s defeat.

With no ATS play standing out, it’s total or bust. Getting points from Seattle doesn’t figure to be much of an issue in this matchup. It’s worth noting that the Jets have been moving the ball more effectively in recent weeks. Against a vulnerable Seahawks pass defense, I’ll pull the trigger on New York being able to make up the difference for an Over hit.

Pick: Over 47.5 (-110 at BetMGM)
