NFL Sunday Night Football Betting Primer: Lions vs. Panthers Picks
Welcome back to another edition of our NFL Sunday Night Football Betting Primer.
When was the last time the Carolina Panthers hosted a Sunday Night Football game? More than 10 years ago - ending the longest active drought in the NFL. The Detroit Lions are no strangers to primetime bright lights, but their defense has hardly been camera-ready. They have been continually gashed by opposing offenses. And Panthers QB Bryce Young? He is cooking. Entering Week 4, Young leads the NFL with 10.2 air yards per attempt and 17 deep pass attempts (20+ air yards), according to NFL Next Gen Stats.
And according to Sharp Football’s Rich Hribar, Young has only seven career starts in games with a total of 47+ points. In those games, he averages 21.7 fantasy points per game.
The process. The process. The process.
With a 51-point projected game total, we should see some fireworks on Sunday night (weather permitting).

Trends
- DET current streaks through Week 3: 2-1 straight up (one-game win streak), 1-2 against the spread (ATS) (one-game cover streak), 3-0 toward the total (three-game Over streak).
- CAR current streaks through Week 3: 1-2 straight up (one-game losing streak), 1-2 ATS (one-game non-cover streak), 1-2 toward the total (two-game Under streak in back-to-back road games).
- DET is 0-1 ATS and 1-0 O/U as the road team in 2026 (through Week 3). As a favorite specifically, DET is 1-1 ATS and 2-0 O/U in 2026.
- CAR is 0-1 ATS and 1-0 O/U as the home team in 2026 (through Week 3). As an underdog specifically, CAR is 0-1 ATS and 1-0 O/U in 2026.
- Detroit has gone over the total in eight of their last 10 games.
- The Lions are just 1-5 ATS over their last six games.
- The Panthers are 15-7 O/U (OVER-leaning) after a loss since 2024 - directly relevant with Carolina coming off a Week 3 loss.
- Carolina has covered the spread in 11 straight games following a loss, dating back to last season - another angle that lines up with this week’s spot (Panthers are home underdogs off a loss).
- Carolina was an excellent home underdog in 2025. In eight such games, they covered six and won outright in five. They're a home underdog again (+3.5), which is the same spread as the CHI-CAR matchup in Week 1.
- Thirteen of the Panthers' last 17 games at Bank of America Stadium have gone OVER the total points line.
Injuries

Betting Preview
My early lookahead take was taking the over, even at an inflated (or at least it was at the time) line of 49.5 points. Bank of America Stadium plays like a Ford Field clone (Coors Field of the NFL), and Carolina’s defense doesn’t have the pieces to slow down Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta, especially with their top two perimeter cornerbacks on injured reserve (IR).
My initial lean was to lay the small field goal with Detroit and smash the OVER. But I’d be lying if I wasn’t slightly concerned by the projected rain forecast. The wind isn’t supposed to be bad - which is typically what drives the total down - but betting on Jared Goff outdoors in any kind of element doesn’t give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. And the total has not moved down from 51 points at the time of this writing.
There is a very strong chance we still get the over to hit, but do a final rain check before placing your bet. As for sides, I think I am reversing course to Carolina - despite all their injuries.
Again, never trust Goff outdoors, let alone in any kind of unwelcoming weather. Second, their offensive skill players are a massive (pun intended) mismatch for this depleted Lions’ secondary.
The most fun fact about this game, according to NFL Next Gen Stats:
Five of the Panthers’ seven most-targeted players stand 6-foot-3 or taller, led by Tetairoa McMillan (6-foot-5), Jalen Coker (6-foot-3) and Darren Waller (6-foot-6). The Lions do not have a single active defensive back taller than 6-foot-0, with top corner D.J. Reed standing 5-foot-9. The average height discrepancy between Carolina wide receivers and tight ends and Detroit defensive backs is 5.2 inches, which would be the third-largest in a game in the last decade if all currently active players are on the field on game day. Since 2025, McMillan and Coker have both recorded notably higher target rates, yards per target and touchdown frequency against defensive backs 6-foot-0 or shorter than against taller ones.
The Panthers’ path to an upset has to be on Young’s arm. I do have some reservations about how effective the ground game will be without starting OG Damien Lewis. Plus, RT Monroe Freeling is also questionable. The Lions’ front seven is not nearly as bad as their secondary.
Per NFL Next Gen Stats, the Lions have missed only 16 tackles through three games for a 7.4% missed tackle rate, the lowest in the NFL. They have allowed 50 yards off missed tackles, the fewest by any defense through three games since at least 2018, for a league-low 3.2 yards per missed tackle. Aidan Hutchinson is one of the top pass-rushers in the NFL, and he can create chaos against a banged-up offensive line. But this is nothing new for Young.
Young has been pressured on 43.5% of his dropbacks this season, the second-highest rate in the NFL. The Lions have generated a 39% pressure rate and converted 21.1% of their pressures into sacks, both of which are the 10th-highest marks in the NFL. They have allowed a league-high 10.7 yards per attempt when causing pressure, per NFL Next Gen Stats.
Ultimately, I think I’ll shy away from the sides and stick with my official play on the total (but my lean is Panthers +3.5).
And like we do with every game featuring the Lions: Jahmyr Gibbs anytime touchdown scorer. Keep rolling over those winnings, folks. But those aren’t the only touchdowns you should be betting on.
Darren Waller, come on down. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the Lions’ defense has allowed 100.1 fantasy points to tight ends this season, the highest mark through three weeks this century. Detroit’s 351 yards given up to tight ends is also the most since at least 2000, while their 29 receptions and six touchdowns - amazingly, to six different players (two touchdowns per game) - allowed are tied for the most. No defense had given up more than 88 fantasy points to tight ends in Weeks 1-3 of a season in this century before the Lions did so this year.
Waller played fewer snaps than starter Tommy Tremble (39 snaps/51% snap share vs. 37 snaps/48% snap share) last week but out-targeted him 8-to-4 and led Carolina in targets. He caught five of his eight targets for 51 yards (16% target share) - a real jump from a light Week 2 workload (three targets). Waller is 100% scoring on Sunday Night Football.
A 5-star prop bet on this week’s cheat sheet: Jared Goff UNDER 34.5 pass attempts. First off, the rain. Indoor cats like Goff don’t like to get wet. So there’s always that angle. But I think this coaching staff knows it doesn’t need Goff to drop back and throw 34+ times to win. That’s probably bad news for the Lions’ odds of winning on the road.
Goff has gone UNDER 34.5 pass attempts in his last three games as a road favorite, and in five of his last 10 road games. Carolina’s defense has faced the sixth-lowest pass rate this season, and of the three quarterbacks they have faced, none threw more than 30 pass attempts. I understand the counterargument that teams might throw more versus Carolina after they lost their two cornerbacks, but I think it just means the passing volume will be more efficient. Part of hitting a pass attempts prop also considers a quarterback’s completion rate. Take Goff, for example. His highest completion rate in a game this season is 78%. It’s also in his game with his fewest attempts (32).
Last season, Goff played in only one game with a completion rate of 69% or higher while attempting at least 35 passes.
Tetairoa McMillan has gone for 70+ yards in two out of three games this season. He also leads all receivers in end-zone targets without a touchdown. Every other wideout with similar end-zone volume has scored at least three times this season.
The lack of volume in Week 3 was more about the Browns' defense than McMillan struggling. They have strong perimeter corners like Denzel Ward. Nobody on Detroit can cover McMillan. Take the over on his yardage prop.
Everybody wants receipts. Here's one: the 4 and 5 star bets from our NFL Prop Bet Cheat Sheet are +52 units through the first 3 weeks of the season.
On $10 bets, that's $520.
